Johan Franzen

Up next? Marian Hossa.

they have to wait till june to see where the caps going to be the next couple years but hossa said he will take less money then he made this year to hang around for a 5 or 6 year deal or even longer

These long deals are interesting. Good security for the player for less yearly
salary. Keeps the team under the salary cap.
They will all look good unless someone suffers a career ending injury.

why would you shake your head
franzens is second in goals on the team with 34 goals hossa first with 40
lets not get started on what he did in the playoffs last year 9 goals in one series 2 hat tricks, thats unheard of.

power forwards seem to peak and then fall off quickly...

See Todd Bertuzzi for a prime example, was an unstoppable force for 3-4 years and then dropped off. I know he had back and suspension issues, but injuries are something you have to account for when you play a physical style of play.

11 years is far too long, I love the cap number, hate the years

good points
Unfortunately thats the only way the wings could sign any of these players. Less years = more money per year.

That's the smartest thing they ever did is sign Zetterberg and Franzen to big deals. Lets hope they stay healthy and hopefully Hossa comes back soon.

That's not a very good example. Franzen doesn't play anywhere NEAR the physical style Bertuzzi played, and the suspension "issue"? He missed a year and a half and was faced with the possibility of jail. He is still(5 years later) involved with a 38 million dollar lawsuit against him. Even without the injuries he's suffered, those extreme circumstance are going to take a toll.

Any long term contract is a risk. But with the salary cap being what it is, I'd rather take the chance on a couple of core players at a discounted price. If you start signing everyone to decade long contracts, then it could be an issue if there is no "out" clause.

hossa's good to go he just had a soar groin and theres no need to make him play and possibly get injured so they just sat him out the last two games just like they did with lidstrom save them and keep them healthy for the playoff stretch

hopefully they can sign hossa for a 5 or 6 year deal in june
