Jegs...Huh?

About a year and a half ago I bought a Jegs brand line lock for my car. About two months ago I finally get the car running, but the hydroboost isn't working. After about a month of dicking around with the Hydroboost, replacing the power steering pump, replacing valves, I finally get that working. I try driving the car and as soon as I step on the brakes they lock up and stay locked, until I crack a bleeder screw.

I determine it is the rear brakes and thinking it is the hydroboost, I start dicking with everything on that, like all of the push rods, etc. I have separate master cylinders for both the front and rear and there are separate push rods for each M/C. I have clearance on both push rods and the piston is fully retracted. Even after I remove the master cylinders from the bracket to assure everything is retracted, the brakes are still locked up...

So, I finally get around to bypassing the line lock and now everything works. No problem, I call Jegs, explain the problem, wait on hold about 10 minutes and they tell me they won't replace the $45 part because I've had it more than a year!! Huh? Just because I can't build an entire car in less than a year, you won't replace a simple part which has never been actuated? Nope, can't do it she said. I told her that I am not the best customer they have, I actually do buy a lot of parts from Jegs, but won't buy anything anymore. She said that was Okay with her and that she still couldn't exchange my part for another one.

I don't want a refund, I just want the part exchanged since I have a small plate welded to the chassis with the correct mounting pattern for the line lock and the brake lines are bent to fit their unit...Sheese.....Nope, still can't do anything about it.

I took it apart and either the bore isn't deep enough or the actuator shaft is too long because nothing can pass thru it when it is assembled. So, it really is a bad part.

Well, there is always Summit and a hundred other places......

That is my final Jegs experience......Gary

I've have encountered similar situations from a few vendors like that. Partial the reason for slow progress for personal hobbies...

What about buying a replacement unit from jegs then returning the defective one? I know it's not right but they aren't really helping you out here.

Glad to hear that the hydroboost wasn't at fault.

I worked in the parts business many moons ago, nothing the lady on the phone can do about a particular parts warranty. You were probably just talking to a regular old customer service rep. with no decision making power. Her attitude sounds like it sucked so she may be able to improve upon that.

Maybe try going directly to the part manufacturer or is it a "jegs" labeled part?

Do what mustangmike suggested above and return the bad one after purchasing an identical new one. I had to do the same with a Siriusxm tuner since SXM were being difficult honoring the warranty.

Yes, it is a Jegs branded part.

I also worked at a high performance auto parts store called Gratiot Auto Supply and had to deal with returns. I know how they work and places like Jegs and Summit are based on what Gratiot pioneered. From the 60's thru the 80's Gratiot sold more Holley carbs, Hurst Shifters and BF Goodrich Tires than anyone in the world, among other products. Whenever we got a defective carb, or anything like that, we would put it on a shelf and a rep would come to the store look at the parts and automatically give us a credit and we kept the part!

It was no problem at all for us and there were never any questions asked. I am sure because of the size of Jegs, it would work the same way. It is no skin off their nose to replace the part as they would get another one for free from the Chinese manufacturer.

Linda Vaughn was always at one of the stores during the 70's.

An after and before pic...And best one ever ;)

Buy new and return defective. If they want to treat people that way, two can play the game.
Gary, you have some truly incredible pictures....

Don't forget to mention Angelo Giampetroni who after Gratiot closed its doors went on to be the marketing director for Ford Racing , he used to hang out at Total Performance all the time , Linda is an amazing person her memory is incredible she never forgets a name

Gratiot Auto Supply was the place back in the day. Everyone got their stuff there, and Linda was everywhere. Her picture was in just about every car magazine you could buy too.

Good luck with the prop valve Gary.

I think she banged everyone in the magazines as well.

I went to Ramchargers too but Gratiot first. I think Gratiot was closed or darn near to it when I started going to Ramchargers.

Then there was that place on Gratiot where svopro worked...can't remember the name now. Bought centerlines and a carter carb. Was it Super Shops?

I had to do this years ago with a tv that was a couples days out of warranty and needed a new power supply. Their solution was to sell me a power supply and ship it from europe ($150 just for shipping). Mine was to buy the same tv and return it. I would have bought the part but after shipping it was half the cost of the tv and they didnt want to work with me at all.
