What's good, everyone?
We're holding another big damn race we call The Thunderdrome! at the once-abandoned Dorais Velodrome on Detroit's east side.
If you're not familiar, in 2010 we started repairing and maintaining the Dorais velodrome, park and playground. We held a really successful first race in October, 2010 for minibikes, mopeds, scooters, pit bikes, go karts, road bikes, mountain bikes, fixed gears and more. We've been taking care of the track, park and playground ever since.
We've done our race twice in 2011 and we're back in 2012 with our event this Saturday, June 30th.
You can scoop the details at thunderdrome.com including entering to race (until June 27th!) or buying spectator tickets online to skip the line. You can also buy spectator tickets at the door for just $5 -- but racers must register online beforehand. All spectators will be automatically entered into a raffle to win all sorts of crazy cool stuff including a new, customized Origin 8 Brutus courtesy of Wheelhouse Detroit.
All proceeds from the race go into maintaining the park and velodrome, repairing the aging track and into the eventual repaving of the entire facility. We're forming a non-profit conservancy shortly to take ownership of the track from the city so we can really begin fixing it up. Our other two non-profit partners for this race are Camp Casey (which is a horseback riding program for children with cancer) and Dog Aide Detroit (which helps lost pups and dogs find homes in Detroit).
Hope to see ya there!
