ok so i drove my 99 mercury mystique to work early in the morning.... it has a bad ac clutch bearing cuz it makes a whole ton of racket kinda like a grinding, but it was ok to me because i dont use my ac and it made a clunking noise when i engaged the ac.... but im just throwing that in as a possible to whats going on... so i park my car in the morning at about 4:30... and come back at about 4 oclock in the afternoon. i get in my car, put the key in and try to start it. it wont start. my cars dash lights are all on... i hear the fuel pump cycle. i try again. nothing. it doesnt make even a clicking noise. it makes a weird noise though. sounds like the starter engages... and is trying to crank the engine over but it bogs down or something and doesnt even crank. and when i let off the key it makes a click. i kept turning the key rapidly and saw some smoke coming from somewhere near my battery. i looked down in where the smoke was coming from, and behind the battery looks to be the starter. some cyilinder think with the solenoid on top im guessing that has to be the starter. so could my car's battery have went bad and didnt get enough power to the starter? its an old ass battery like 5 years old. or is my starter cooked and not cranking... or could it be that the pulley seized up and wont allow the engine to start? i doubt that because it would just burn my belt up you would think...
