The week in which Apple is set to release the new Siri enabled iPhone 4S and reach the long touted release date for the iOS 5 operating system has seen yet another Apple iProduct land first. Today the company pushed out the iTunes 10.5 update for Mac and Windows, which among other things, delivers compatibility for the other new goods. The move comes amid a busy week for Apple: its servers are about to being pushing out the iOS 5 download to hundred of million of existing iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users as of tomorrow. Apple Stores and other iPhone retailers are gearing up for massive sales this Friday as the iPhone 4S goes on sale. Meanwhile iPhone 4S carriers in the U.S. combined to notch more than a million 4S preorders online in a twenty-four hour span this week, as AT&T and Verizon along with newcomer Sprint joined the fray. But today’s focus is iTunes 10.5, which retains the same basics and interface as earlier iterations of iTunes 10.x but is defined by three new features.
Apple’s first weapon of choice for iTunes 10.5 is iCloud, which allows iTunes purchases including songs and TV episodes to be stored on Apple’s servers and tapped into on-demand via any of your iTunes or iOS devices. This includes the option to have your purchases automatically download to each of your devices (buying a song via iTunes on your computer and having it immediately also download itself to your iPhone, for instance) and also includes the ability to download any previous purchases, including those you may have lost due to drive failure, for free (unless the item no longer exists in the iTunes Store). You can now also sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer via wifi, without the need for connecting a sync cable. Additionally, iTunes 10.5 is needed for syncing compatibility with iOS 5 enabled devices.
Not every existing iUser will be presented with iOS 5 immediately, however. iTunes automatically checks for updates about once a week. To receive it sooner, connect your iDevice to your computer, click on “Check for updates” in iTunes. Those looking for Siri voice control to be included in iOS 5 will be disappointed, however; it’s only available on the iPhone 4S
