My buddy Steve Koehler (now he works on the Avenger monster truck that his brother owns and drives) and I build the whole system for the the Explorer. I can PM you pix of the truck when I get home tonight.Uthinkso said:Pics??? Was it built by tunes or was did you participate in the DB Drags there at Monster Sounds. IF you were competing I probably didn't see you, that was a huge sales day for us and I would have been inside putting the hustle on.
My set-up was cheap and simple, but it showed that enclosure design and trial and error will pay off huge. Less than 1000 watts, two JL 12w3', slot ported enclosure that was roughly six cubes, and a single PPI 2150 (grey series they had). That was all it took in my 97 Jimmy.

Crazzy_Al said:For the record, my last Explorer had 4 12's in it and hit a highest of 160.8db in Outlaw. In DB drags I would bring 2 friends with me. 1 to sit on the power sunroof (which would pop open a good 2") and 1 guy on each side of the truck pushing the corners of the doors closed because they would flex. The tailgate had almost 3 lbs of Dynamat on the license plate alone, 4 layers of Dynamat all over the inside of the tailgate metal, and 4 layers of Dynamat all through all of the sheet metal we could get to from inside the truck. Tapping that thing from the outside of any panel or door sounded like a brick, not a metal car. All in all the truck probably had at least 200lbs of Dynamat on it. The rear glass was reinforced the whole way around with 2 layers or 1/4 inch thick RV tape. The only way to close that glass was to put your weight into it and hope the latch held. And even with all of that, the tailgate and rear glass still flexed when the amps were up at DB drag level. Ask Frankie, (Stugotz) he heard that truck numerous times when the amps were set at every day driving levels, and even that made you sick to your stomach. If you were sitting in the front seat of the truck when the amps were at cruising level, and the windows were closed, your hair would wave around with every bass note. Just, FYI.![]()
