I was the driver of the car. I was talking with someone on PM here about his crash and told him that 'hey, I know what you went through' and sent him that link. He was like 'oh I've seen that before'. Well, that crash is ALL OVER THE INTERNET. About 1.5 years ago, this appeared on literally 40 different car sites. People were doing the 'he should have lifted blah blah blah.' Well, ya...hindsight is 20/20.
Now, for the story. I was setting up a very large street race out here in California. My car was not going to be done in time so I asked my best friend if I could borrow his Camaro and accepted full responsibility for the car. He was reluctant until I said 'full responsibility'. I paid to get the car running (minor odds and ends) and upgraded some parts in the front suspension as a 'thank you'. The first pass in the car that day was a 10.45 at 134 by the owner on motor. The car was out of shape the first half of the track, then dead hooked and was gone.
I got behind the wheel...with lots of adrenaline!!!! I launched and it was 'slightly' out of shape. The 'slightly out of shape' turned (literally) for the worst. I thought it was going to grab and go like I had seen it do many times before that day. My experience in racing was only in stangs with rack/pinion steering. My lack of knowledge of the car, my stupidity of going balls out in a car I'd never raced...were a few of the rookie mistakes I made when racing that car. Even though it shot right, it was all driver error...nothing wrong with the car. The car really shot right when I clicked it into high gear. By the time I realized what was going on, my foot couldn't react to what my mind was telling it to do. Again, hindsight is 20/20.
Still friends? Hell yes. The owner, my best friend, was the best man in my wedding a year and a half later. Two weeks after the crash I bought a beautiful 67 RS Camaro to replace that one. While I had the motor rebuilt, my best friend came into some money troubles and had to sell the car. Now, the motor was done with no Camaro to go in. We worked out a deal on the motor and it now is housed in my 88 Coupe!!!!
Its now 3.5 years later and my buddy is back in the game. He just bought a 68 Camaro and I am helping him as much as I can to get it going. My goal is to eventually get this motor back in his car.
