Not totally urgent but the sooner the better. I may need to go to canada within the next 3 weeks.

Any suggestions?

Set up an appt with the chicago office, drive out there in the morning & have it by the afternoon.

Thats what any of those next day service places do (except they make a few hundred bucks).

go to the SOS and get a enhanced ID. they are 50.00. I got mine in 2 weeks. they will tell u 3-4 to cover their ass but everyone i know thats got one has got theirs in 1-2 weeks. Its good for MI residents only and allows you to cross the border

I applied for one and got it in 8 days, pretty cool system

that new card seems like it would be nice. but it only works if your driving across the border. if you have to fly to canada, youll have to get a passport, ive done the 1 day passport in chicago, just make sure ur there waitin about half hr before they open with your photos and whatever other info, i had my old passport and theyll have it ready at the end of business that day.

I just renewed mine and it took about ten days with the extra $50 for expiditing. It was a renewal though, not a brand new one.

you only need your bc and license/id. they pushed back the passport thing until september.

No they didn't. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL

ALL PERSONS traveling by land and sea outside of the United States are required to present a passport book/card, or other valid travel documents to enter or re-enter the United States.

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website:

Effective June 1, 2009, all U.S. citizens are now required to present a passport book, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document when entering the United States.
Please Note: Children under age 16 will be able to continue crossing land and sea borders using only a U.S. birth certificate (or other form of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate.). The original birth certificate or a copy may be used. See the Department of Homeland Security's Ready, Set.. Go! for more information on the changing travel requirements.

I just got my son's passport done in 2 weeks w/o paying the fees to expedite it. (He's 2 so his background check was probably pretty quick.)

I just applied for a trusted traveler card (NEXUS). Thats supposed to be good for border crossing. How long has that taken any of you?

To Enter the U.S. by Land or Sea
U.S. citizens must present one of the following WHTI-approved documents to enter the country when returning by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean:

Enhanced driver's license or identification card
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
Trusted Traveler cards (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
Enhanced tribal cards
U.S. military identification with military travel orders
U.S. Merchant Marine document
Native American tribal photo identification card
Form I-872 American Indian card

I may go for the enhanced license tomorrow as well

They want more than a bc and lisence.. I got the talking to this time coming back. Guard said he put a warning on my record saying I've been warned once and don't cross again without the enhanced lisence or a passport. He was quite the richard. :)

Actually, there are many states that are on board with the enhanced drivers license like New York, New Mexico, and Washington to name a few...

Like everyone has said though, they come in rather fast (took my mom about a week), and are great for travel to Canada via land or sea port!

Good Luck!

I am looking for it right now (if i had to bet I would say the new Federal Building on Jeffereson near the Chrysler assemby plant):

DETROIT, March 21 (UPI) -- A new regional U.S. passport office
in Detroit is open, but its staff has been mostly idle because word hasn't gotten out to travelers, officials said.

The office was established last week to issue passports for people with urgent plans to travel abroad within 14 days, eliminating the need for people to go all the way to Chicago. But so far, its 10 employees haven't had much to do, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.

That's because the U.S. State Department appointment system doesn't list the Detroit facility as an option either on its Web site or on its telephone appointment line -- and appointments are needed to use its services.

"We are taking people as they walk in," Carolyn Kieffer, the office's acting director, told the newspaper. "We've had a few. It's a soft opening right now. It's a little gem that people don't know about."
