I FUCKING HATE DEER!!!

We use to own V6 Camaro, until we sold it to my son about 2 months ago the weekend before he was to take Possession of it, he asks if he can borrow it to go to a party. I give him the huge lecture about never trusting him again if he drinks and drives that this will be his one and only chance if any happens to the car. blah blah you get the idea . Well the party is over in Webberville where he lives and is an hour away. About 90 mins. after he leaves I get a phone call, UMMMM mom. I HIT A DEER. He was going about 50 when he hit it and it was a good size deer. But the air bags DID NOT GO OFF.
Well the following week he takes the car home and a few days after that I get a phone call. Mom ask Eric how to remove the airbags after they have deployed. He hit a opossum going about 25 and the air bags went off.

Grand Am’s scoop those damn things up, I hit a deer on 96 in downtown Brighton doing about 80 the thing flew about 35 feet in the air and landed as hamburger. I was so scared that damn thing was going to come into the windshield. Glad to hear your both okay

In responce to the air bags not going off: Be happy they didn't if she didn't want a new car. The car would be totalled by your insurance company had they gone off.

And it really depends on how hard the impact is on the front bumper. A guy I graduated with was bitching because he got in a car accident where he rearended a van in a Cavalier and the cavalier went underneath the van - damaging the hood and only the hood, yet he wanted the air bags to go off.... Deer do a lot of the same to cars, yeah - they'll hit the bumper, but not with enough crushing force to require the need of air bags. I bet your hood took most of the damage! :)

Also, most vehicles nowadays, don't use JUST crushing force to determine if air bags are required or not, they monitor wheel speed sensors to determine how fast the car is coming to a stop, if you are gradually decreasing in speed at a safe rate as well - it doesn't utilize the air bags to save you money.

I'd believe it. When the 'maro hit the deer most of the damage was probably done to the hood with how low it is - yet the possum did more damage to the bumper :) Your son go to school out here? I'm in East Lansing. Not far from Webberville...

yeeeaaaaaa....its good now. I can laugh at this...because it is kinda funny how it happend. And for somereason the pics won't load up on my computer.

Damn. I'm trying to find more people around Lansing with nice cars. I think I've found just about all of em!!

The air bag sensor in that car is probably just behind the grille, if it was an offset impact, or an impact that hits too high (like hitting a truck bumper) most likely it wont go off.

Now if it was a volvo you just have to lean on the damn fender and all 20 bags go off.

The older Ford crash senors had a brass ball bearing. When the impact was great enough the the brass ball bearing would move just enought to touch a contact and it would deploy the airbag.

I don't know if they are still built that way<I've been out of the BS for awhile>

Yup and they worked well for the most part.

Nope haven't been built that way for some time.

+1 for the knowledge.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/airbag.htm Link is an accurate description for the most part, some shit is a little wrong but people can get the idea.

Welcome to my hell of everyday life where I live. I have 2 already this year, I was lucky I just happen to be moving my snow plow that day and never caused a bit of damage to the truck or the plow. Yes I hit both deer at the same time. Have hit at least one every year for the last 4 years.
