How much trouble could I be in?

Hey guys, need your help with my new exhaust set up... How much trouble could I be in?

I'm possibly looking to re-route my exhaust out the front fender on the TA at Headlight level between the front wheel well and the headlight. My question is, how illegal is it in Michigan? I'll be on Woodward here and there and in and around the Royal Oak area. I know the cops in that area are known to be D-Bags at times, but is it illegal, and if so, how often do they enforce it? What are the fines?

Here is a picture of an old fender. It's cut to where my exhaust would be placed.

Definitely not legal. But neither is big 4 1/2 inch glass packs that are 8 inches long, and a lot of people run them on WW. Tons of car out on WW drive on slicks, open headers, ect, cops just pick and choose what is too excessive or too illegal. But in my opinion, you will get more shit for that exhaust then you will for open headers under the car driving on slicks.

Most aftermarket exhaust is "illegal"... I would do it anyways... Im thinking you would get off since you are probably not a young punk, you could explain that the car is only taken out for certain special occasions, and maybe being ex military would help?

It looks like the location alone is not going to be a issue. But it's a turbo motor, so it doesn't have mufflers or a cat.
As far as getting off due to being a Vet... Ask Hugger Z how that worked out for me in 2008. I got pulled for rolling on Hoosier QTPs (DOT approved).
He then wrote me up a warning for the QTPs which doesn't make any sense, and then wrote me up for windshield banner, nitrous, and illegal front tires lol.

The car is a little loud, but I doubt it's not even close to a car with open headers.
Yeah, I'm going to be taking the car out maybe once every 2 weeks if that. I'm hoping I can afford the fines with it.
Are there any fix it tickets issued in Michigan? My car doesn't have windshield wipers either. So I'm hoping I don't get a "you have 30 days to fix this or you'll lose your registration with the state" ticket.

Yes there is "fix it" tickets issued in Michigan. QTP tires or "cheater slicks" are illegal on public roads by definition. Just because DOT approved them doesn't mean every state will allow them to be legal on their roads.

So if you get issued a "Fix it" ticket, and you don't fix it, does the state revoke your license or void your registration? How often do you guys see them being handed out?
On the QTPs thing. The side wall states that the tire is "Not recommended for Highway Use". It says nothing about a street, or an Ave. That was basically all I had for the cop, and we wrote them as a warning. It doesn't matter at this point now, I've been using MT ET street DRs for the last 4 years.

ive got mine out the bumper and its no louder than any other mustang out here, even gets quieter when youre moving. im more worried about the fireballs being shot at the cars next to me

I completely agree on the tires. I run full slicks the past 5 years on the street and never am issue. The cheater slicks are still illegal as well if the cop wants to be a dick and write you for it. I pay my fix it tickets and go on with my day. I've had fix its for window tint, exhaust, ect. Nothing to major. I paid the fine for the ticket and never changed my stuff. Just kept a signed copy that I already paid a fine for it. Never any issues with that.

unless your grooves are under the minimum tread depth, there's no law that would make a DOT approved drag radial or "cheater slick" illegal. That's the type of thing that SEMA jumps all over.

To be clear... If I were to get a "Fix It" ticket in Michigan, I have a choice to pay a fine and not even have to fix it, or I can just fix it and not pay a fine?

correct. i got a fix it ticket for a tint back in the day and just paid the $120 and never removed it. have had the same cop that issued the ticket pull me over since and he never mentions it. they just want their cut of your $$.

 Yeah that really didn't help that day. Then again, it was the week of Woodward. The rest of the year they are not always as strict unless you get caught doing something stupid.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm probably just going to do it anyways.
Do it! ;)

Another vote for just do it! There's all kinds of crazy stuff out there, and if you follow the law, most of our vehicles are illegal in one way or another. Its the luck of the draw, and chances are if you get pulled over out there, you're getting a few skids anyway. lol

kind of unrelated but how much of a pain is it to keep a car clean running the downpipe out the fender like that? Does the exhaust make a total mess out of that side?

Not exactly the same but on my 01 Lightning the exhaust exited the passenger side near the lower panel. The passenger side rear wheel and lower panels were always filthy after a drive, especially when using race fuel or fuel additive.
