How much does an intake really help?

I have an LS1 GTO. I currently have a catless midpipe/SLP muffler exhaust setup, but was just wondering if an intake would really be worth the $150-$300 it'd cost? Or is it sort of a wash?

I know my buddies with ls1 camaros and trans ams run the slp box with a ls3 intake and they like them and said it helps alot of course they put there plenums on when they did long tube headers so I don't think they could tell which made the biggest difference

any time you mod the air tract you will need someone to tune the VE table to get the most out of it.

Just FYI, when a real hod rodder refers to an "intake", he is talking about an actual intake manifold, the one that bolts on the heads/engine. When a ricer refers to an "intake", he is talking about a tube that a conical air filter fits on :)

Low restriction airfilter from donalson would be just as effective if you cut out the bottom of the airbox.

An LS6 intake would probably give you 15-20hp

AFAIK the GTO LS1 already has the LS6 intake.

As far as a "cold air intake" I wouldn't bother unless you get the "over the radiator" one that Svede makes. Are you planning on tuning the car? That'll be where you get the most bang for the buck. On '04s you can even enable lean cruise and get a couple extra mpg on the highway.
