Car and Driver uncovers trouble with Corvette Stingray's LT1 V8

There are two kinds of supercars: those made by niche manufacturers and those made by mainstream ones. The niche supercars tend to be a rarer and more exotic sight, but some buyers opt for more mainstream supercars because, for one reason at least, they'll be more reliable. Right?

That's not always the case, as Car and Driver recently found out. The publication's Corvette Stingray long-term tester blew out its LT1 V8 engine entirely after only 6,000 miles, necessitating a complete replacement. Fortunately, it was under warranty, but it contributed to the 'Vette having to spend an inordinate amount of time in the shop ? something you might expect from a small Italian manufacturer, for example, but not from one of the largest automakers in the world.

The problem apparently boiled down to metal debris from a bad oil filter getting into the lubication system, knocking out a con-rod bearing and totaling the engine block. GM is reportedly investigating the issue, which was just one of several problems C/D encountered with the flagship Chevy, but which haven't stopped our compatriots in Ann Arbor from enjoying the time they've had so far with the all-American supercar, or from taking it on long-distance road trips to Indiana, Chicago, even Virginia and New Jersey.

So, clickbait title with the truth of the matter buried in the third paragraph. Really professional, guys.

That's what the article says...buried after a couple paragraphs talking about how bad and unreliable the new engine is.

I read that too and kinda thought the same thing. You're right, it's BS inflammatory journalism. Leave that crap to the rest do the media. Jeez!

I read this a few days ago and agree.

I've seen some bad oil filters before, mostly Fram brand. But when you're the manufacturer making a high end sports car shouldn't you be using one of the best filters available? And if you are then how often are they known to fail and or cause issues? It has me wondering if the engine actually did have problems internally and if they're pointing fingers at the filter as a scapegoat? If so, that new engine was doomed from the time they designated it LT1. The last one was a bastard child, i hope this one isn't.

The article also said it had 6,000 miles, which means it should have had at least 1 oil change at that point. I'm not sure how those long-term test vehicles work, but I guess there is a slight possibility that the original oil filter was replaced with something that was of poorer quality, or was just a single bad filter in a batch. Even the best companies make bad parts once in a while. No idea if that's the case, but still - the whole article was written like the engine just destroyed itself out of nowhere, which just isn't true if their other claim is also true.

GM oil life monitors on LS engines tell you to change the oil at like 9000 miles. I'm assuming on a long term test car you would follow the manufacturer's suggested maintenance intervals. So, probably the original filter still.

Most likely still the factory filter, I know at Ford we don't change the oil on our test cars till 8-10k
