EAST LANSING -- Former Michigan State point guard Keith Appling was arrested over the weekend carrying a loaded AK-47 at a Dearborn strip club, according to a report from WXYZ.
The report cites anonymous sources.
A spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy confirmed there is a warrant review request underway for Appling in their office. She wouldn't say what charges are being sought.
Nancy Hamood-Strutz, the admin. assistant for Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad, said "if there is anything, it will be tomorrow before it is released."
A Detroit native who played for Pershing High School and won the state's Mr. Basketball, Appling started 123 games for Michigan State, tied for third-most in school history. He's No. 18 on the school's career scoring list, with 1,509 points.
Appling made his NBA debut this past season, playing in five games for the Orlando Magic in his second professional season. He spent the majority of his season in the NBA D-League with the Erie Bayhawks, where he averaged 19 points and 5.3 assists per game.
Appling is the third former Michigan State player to be arrested in the last two months. On March 15, Mateen Cleaves was charged with sexual assault in Genesee County. Also in March, Branden Dawson was arrested under suspicion of spousal abuse. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office declined to press charges in the case.
