Hot tub people

OK. So. I'm getting a 8 person hot tub that my friend is giving me. It's an older unit. Built in 2002. Very clean, one pump needs a capacitor replaced and the ozone cartridge needs to be replaced. For a early 2000's unit, it surprisingly has lots of jets. There are like 40 or 50 on it and it has a bunch of fiber optic lights where the water line is. Pretty neat. I've already sourced out parts for this thing and I'll have it up and running in no time. All the pluming is good and all the wiring and brain box is in great shape. No cracks, scuffs or stains. I need to get a new cover (a bad ass one to insulate it really good) and I plan on insulating the cab it sits in.

I've read online that people insulate their hot tubs really good and only have 30-40 dollar increase on their winter bills. I'd like some advice on what you all think about insulating it. I was going to buy 2 inch rigid insulation foam board from Home Depot and basically glue it to the inside of the wood cab on all sides. Great stuff the corners and cover the cement ground it sits on with foam board. Then on top of the foam board, cover that with the aluminum foil bubble wrap stuff you get at Home Depot. Thoughts?? Also, the ozone filter is shot and I need to get a new one, but they discontinued the part. Can I fab in another one, or do I need to find that exact part? AND...do I REALLY need a ozone filter????

Thanks Motown.

No one was ever able to come though for me to hook me up with a used one, so I can't help, I definitely want one

I run mine all year now because the winter was harder on it than running all year. And honestly, it is more enjoyable when there is a pile of snow around it than when its 90* outside. I have seen people fill the cabinet with minimal expansion spray foam. You can get it with a nice "R" rating and it helps a lot. The cover is also key to keeping the heat in the tub. I used a piece of swimming pool solar cover over the water in conjunction with a nice thick top cover. It worked well. Remember what ever you do to the outside of the tub needs to be undone before you use it when there is 6 inches of snow on the ground. Pain in the ass! Live and learn. LOL Enjoy!

If you put a tarp over it, or block it all up with insulation panels, you have to move all that crap before you can use it.

Gotcha. Yeah. It would suck to be moving stuff while there's 6 inches of snow and your in nothing but your bathing suit. LOL. All the insulation panels I'm going to add would be on the inside of the wood cab, in between the wood and the tub. I cant wait for this thing to get here.

I use to have one, the novelty wore off. Between chemicals, cleaning and just not using it, I drained it. Sold it with the old house and haven't missed it. I did what you are talking about with the insulation though, I packed in as much as I could. Mine was a 8 person Hot Springs. The insulation did help keep the tub's heater from running all the time. I also bought a really good insulated cover for it. FYI sex in a hot tub is over rated

Why not do typical fiberglass insulation? Much better R value for the few inches that you have

Water sex sucks period. The water slows down your thrust speed. LOL. Also, you cant get a damn grip with your feet sliding all over the place. Hahaha!

I'll have to look into that. You mean like house insulation that comes in a roll?

Agreed that the novelty wears off eventually. However, I found it was a great marketing tool to close the deal on where the after bar should take place. It was ridiculous. I've never seen anything like it.
Eventually my tub needed too many repairs and I scrapped it. But it was a damn good time for a while.

You dont want to use fiber insulation. The heat and moisture would kill it. I have a 2003 Coast Spa tub and just filled it with expandable foam. The great stuff black can works good, but if you can find the green can of expandable foam made by GE, its softer and expands more. Also just purchased a new cover from my pool place. Made be Castle right here in michigan. I got the top of the line cover, 6" thick in center, 5" on edges, dual vapor blocker, ect.Cover was around $475.
