Hook up on Golf cart parts?

Anyone knows some one that rebuild these speed contollers, my buddy got a free EZ GO golf cart but it needs this :

Curtis 36-volt 300 amp DCS (1206SX-005)solid state speed controller. ITS throttle input. For E-Z-GO electric DCS 1995-99

Damn things are like $250-400. Its just a bunch of electronic goodies in a box and seems very expensive for what it is. Any thoughts or Ideas on the cheap???

Go to the golf cart forums and buy a used one for $50 - $100 . A lot of guys upgrade there carts and the controller is one of the first things to go.

I dont know anything about golfcarts but really dont when it comes to battery ones. whats to be gained by upgrading the controller, should I just tell him there is a better than stock controller because it will do this or that with the upgraded one? School me, also whats a good forum for these things?
