Home Theather / Audio Gurus - Help.. No sound!

Hello,

I have an Epson 8350 projector and Onkyo HTS5400 7.1 surround sound system.

I used the Audyssey device and all of the speakers seem to work during the test.

I have a Comcast HD cable box hooked up with the HDMI cord and "cable in" plugged in. I get a picture on the screen, but no sound.

I'm not the most technical, but do have the red, green, blue wires in the back of the projector plugged in. I'm not exactly sure where to plug them into the receiver however.

Any help would be appreciated. Please see diagram below.

Thank you,
Rick

Do you have optical out from cable box to your receiver? Also check your box audio settings and ensure dolby digital is enabled if it's an option.

Do you also have an HDMI cable attached to your projector? Cause you don't need audio cables going to the projector.

I do not have the optical out from the cable box to receiver. One of the guys at work explained it to me and I think I understand now how to make it work. I'll give it a try tonight.

Thank you,

Rick

red blue and green are for component video signal. only audio wires are your traditional red and white stereo coax's, optical, and HDMI handles video and sound. Hope this helps.

Correct. HDMI handles video and sound, but projectors typically don't have speakers. :) He needs an optical audio out from the cable box to the surround sound receiver and he will be mint.

My 2 cents is the audio output for the cable got switch off hdmi somehow. Playing kids maybe or playing adults. There should be a setting to tell it to get audio from hdmi. Does the Onkyo HTS5400 have an onscreen setup? What input is the cable setup to. Then check for audio on that input. Example would be TV is the input name and it is setup to optical 1 as opposed to hdmi 1.

According to the manual on page 35 it states that the audio is automatically switch to hdmi when it is assigned to a channel. My next guess would be the same audio output on the cable box. Get into the cable box setting and make sure it is outputting audio to the hdmi. To me the projector connection is irrelevant but it is interesting it outputs to component with an hdmi input. That is a NO NO per the RIAA.

Oh I just looked up your projector Make sure you get an hdmi cable to hook that up. Do not use RED GREEN BLUE. if you do you cannot output 1080P. Monoprice.com has great prices on hdmi cables. If you hook it up hdmi from comcast box to onkyo then to projector it should automatically configure itself.

So my tuner is a Denon. Before I purchased the Logitech Harmony remote, my wife was consistently turning the sound off. I could not figure out how to turn it back on. Finally discovered that she was getting into source setup and changing the audio source (separate from video) from HDMI to Analog! Had great picture but no sound. First time it happened was last February. I spent hours prior to last years SB trying to figure out how to get sound. Could not make it happen before game time without rewiring using the source cables.

Finally got it corrected with the Harmony Remote (she could not get into setup). Came home one day and she had done it with that remote after watching a video. I started looking for rope.....good thing I could not find any....

WHY would she do that? Hope she had a good explanation.

I took 99slverz's advice and it worked great... MINT as he would say. Just bought an optical out cable and attached that from the cable box to the receiver.

Now he's officially joined the pen 15 club... Party at Ricks!

LOL, Definitely!!!

Superbowl party at Ricks.. ;)

The basement is coming along well.... just need to build the wet bar now!

I was doing it totally wrong. I now have one HDMI going to the cable box and one going to my X-Box. I have an optical out from the cable box to the receiver and an optical out from the X-Box to the receiver and it works great.
