Home Protection? help/opinions wanted..

As far as the dog sitation goes... I already have a pit bull, but if an intruder has a gun, I'm not taking the chance on sending him downstairs after a guy with a gun, he'll be shot.

ok... couple of things to think about here.

how will you know if the perp has a gun? you won't. assume he does.

if there is someone already in your house, your dog isn't doing his job. having said that, once he is in the house, the last thing you want to worry about is keeping a dog at bay. either let it have the run of the house and be your first line of defense, or crate it. you don't want your dog to become a liability. as much as i love my dogs, i'd rather one of them deal with a perp instead of my wife or kid.

as for loading your shotgun within earshot of a perp... well, that doesn't make a lot of tactical sense. as soon as you think something is up, your weapon should be in condition one (loaded, chambered, safety off) ready to go.

The dog can not get out of my room unless I let him out. But, as soon as someone hits that door, either one front or back, he will go insane as he usually does. At that point the gun would be brought out and be ready to go.

As far as the sound goes.. I am unsure of keeping it loaded in the house, although it's just me, still probably not the best idea.

As I've stated I am new to learning about these types of things... so if you are going to make a point... dont be a dick about it... REIKO!

sorry was typing slow, we have just allways let our dogs have the run of the house.

I live about a quarter mile north of 8 mile in Ferndale. I've seen some shady people wandering when I come home late from a bar.

I'd rather take my chances at the top of my stairs with a shotty, once I wrap it, it's loud enough most people recognize that sound.

I have shot several guns in my lifetime, many friends have lots of em, but most just buy and buy and buy just to have an arsenal. I've never really payed attention enough to say that I am educated at all on the different types of guns. I want one gun for home protection. The general consensus I get is buy a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot and start practicing. I think that's the way I'm headed, just wanted some of your guys' opinions because I know a lot of you are gun enthusiasts.

just a few questions , inot trying to be a smart ass but.

hows the guy gonna get into the house, before the dog knows he is there?

If he trys to kick down a door, the dog will be on him or at least barking before he get thru.

If he breaks a window , and trys to come thru , the dog will rip him apart.

We had dogs all the time noone could get within 10 feet of out house without the dogs knowing.

There is no way he could get close without the dog knowing. Very true, but that doesnt mean i'm gna let the dog loose on him. It'd be my luck that somehow it would come back to bite me in the ass that he is a pitbull and attacked a human being.. LOL!

ah but if thats the case , and you shoot him and he falls or crawls outside your house and dies , thats a bigger bite in the ass.

Please tell me how I'm being a dick here???

really? i'm askin for help and I get that huh?

i don't think reeek-oh is trying to be a dick... he's just being vehement about what he's trying to say.

i say, let the dog run the house. as for guns, i'd personally get a handgun first. especially if it's just you. easier to train on, more capacity and you can take it to the range and have more fun with it... plus you have the option of getting a CPL at some point.

Uh, you asked for help and he told you you were wrong about something. I fail to see how he was being a dick. :shake:

I just dont see, anyone having the balls to continue a break in, with a pit bull barking up a storm.

the guy breaks in a window , climbs thru , with a big ass dog barking. The lights in your bedroom turn on, and he still gonna try to come upstairs? or continue the theft? Sorry but i dont see it .

LOL! ok Reiko is never a dick! :) He is a nice guy... lets all :grouphug: and move on. :)

I appreciate your guys comments. Thanks!

We had a guy at my moms that knocked on the door and when she opened it, tried to force his way in. Shit happens.

thats what i read that most happen during the day with people posing as repair/service men.

In that case, a shotgun upstairs in a bedroom would be usless, hence i go back to a big dog.

I have a 9mm XD, and a couple shot guns. The 9 is just so easy to grab and maneuver in a home invasion situation.

As much as I love my dog.....everyone knows how much! I would rather have him tearing ass at an intruder than me having to get in a confrontation and shoot the intruder.

My dog is not and wasn't meant for protection, but dogs do intimidate. It is my duty to protect my pet, but I am not holding him back from an intruder either.

At night...Khan sleeps in bed and I would probably hear something long before him though

I have a 9mm Glock if something happens.

I don't know how big your house is, but I could shoot someone with a hand gun while half asleep from the top of my stairs. It's not like your target is the size of an ant.

I think he was referring to Reiko being general with his response....underlining is telling the guy he's wrong....but it'd help to further explain what is right in more detail.

when i read reiko's post i had zero idea what is the correct statement. Im going to be coming to this change soon and am too thinking about a dog and/or gun. With a newborn coming im leaning towards a gun though....

Shelly,
Odie is on point at all times. If someone is in the yard, not only do the dogs around me bark, but if they are in his back yard, he goes insane. My friend came over last week to get something out of my garage, and he said he could hear odie's cage slamming against the side wall of the house and him going crazy. He has woken me up at night because someone is in or around the house. I have seen lurkers in the neighborhood at 3 or 4am. Everyone around me has a dog... so most people's presence is known.

What I'm worried about is the ballzy mf'er that just kicks the door in and doesnt care. At that point, I'd like a little more than Odie to protect me. Although he is a pitty, on shot or a knife from a robber takes him out. Him running followed by me with a gun is another story
