Home Heating and Cooling...does anyone have a hook-up? I need help ASAP!!

Mr. Hair Gel Overgeller
Like the title says, I need to get a heeting and cooling person over at my place today.

My house got down to 58* upstairs at around 4:30 this morning and the furnace would not kick on for some reason. I cranked the lever on the thermostat to 90* and waited...nothing.

I went down stairs, checked the pilot (it was lit) messed with a couple things, and nothing. I pulled the front cover (the one that blocks the flame when the furnace fires up, the wires, etc) and as soon as I pulled the cover off, the furnace fired up. I put the cover back on and went back upstairs, put the lever on the t-stat at a normal setting, and went back to bed. 10 minutes later, the furnace shuts off. I pulled the cover again, wiggled a few wires, and the furnace fired up again so I went to sleep.

I get up this morning, the house is at 60*. I'm ok with that but my wife and daughter aren't, and I know there is something wrong here. I go wiggle the wires, I hear the click, the flame fires up, the furnace kicks on, and we're off...only to have it work 10 10 minutes and shut off again. It just did it again! So I go wiggle the wires, I hear the click, the flame fires up, the furnace kicks on.

I need help, folks. Money's tight as hell right now with me having just started a new job and not having any commissins rolling in yet, so if anyone can help me, I'd be VERY appreciative!!!!

Thanks in advance!

I am sure my buddy can fix it. Give'em a call Don @ Autumn Heating and Cooling 586-871-0311. They are located in St. Clair Shores.
How good of a friend of yours is he? PM your 1st and last name again, please. :(

Normal stuff to check is:

Batteries in the thermostat (sometimes they go bad, they are only batteries), and breakers (if you know how to use a voltmeter).

Assuming this is a forced air furnace?

RECAP: Furnace was on (power was going to it) thermostat was calling for heat, and nothing? You pulled the cover off wiggled some wires and the furnace started blowing heat? You put the cover back on, and it shut off?

I'm thinking loose wire/connector. corrosion. What i'm trying to understand is why the furnace started with the cover off? There is a safety switch, that disables the furnace when you yank the cover, unless your holding the switch, (simulating the cover being on)

could be a faulty switch also

TRY THIS: Call for heat (set stat to 90 degrees or so) go downstairs and listen for a clicking sound, should be a few repeated clicks.

What is happening

TRY THIS: Call for heat (stat at 90) go downstairs, pull the cover off, there should be a safety switch (press and hold) This switch deactivates the furnace when the cover is off to activate furnace. If you can see the burners are light (while pressing) a fan should kick on, and start forcin. If you have flames but no fan, most likely its the fan that burnt out.

OBVIOUSLY DON'T FUCK WITH IT IF YOU'RE NOT CONFIDENT TO DO IT, YOU'LL BLOW THE BITCH UP.

MOVE THE LADIES OUT OF THE HOUSE

I had to root cause my own furnace last year, The guy wanted 90 bucks for the 10 minutes he was in my house with a fucking voltmeter checking the things i told you.

then he wanted 487 dollars when I/we found out the fan was burnt out.

..... I went to grainger, and did it myself for 45 dollars.

I agree with Monster. I had some of the same issues, although mine ended up being some corrosion after cleaning up some connections and thermocouples. They are very simple if you feel comfortable sitting down and looking at how it works etc. for 20 minutes or so. Good luck.

Awwwwww shit!!! I think I fixed this issue on my own. :D The next couple hours will tell. I will say this, my upstairs is now 68*, the second from last heating cycle was well over 10 minutes, (and I manually shut it down) and the second from last cycle also started on it's own. (without any wire wiggling from me) And FYI, I lowered my heat settings on my new t-stat, waited about 30 minutes for the temp to fall that 1*, I heard the click, I heard the fire blaze, then the fans started running, and that cycle is currently running. I think all is well. :D **prays**

Dave, the thermostat that was on there (till about a half an hour ago) was one of the old school mechanical ones. I just installed a digital one (even though it turns out that the t-stat was NOT the problem) and am now going to fuck with it a bit. Maybe set some cool custom climate settings for various hours of the day. Maybe even save a few $$$ byt doing that.

you actually DONT save money setting different temps.
set it at one temp and leave it.
I guess that kind of makes sense. After all, the furnace-A/C is going to have to work harder to catch up to the *desired* temp setting. Buuuuut at the same time, it works less when going to the sleep, or away hours. Hmmmm....

And because of the way weather and energy costs are constantly changing, there's no way for me to be able to find out for sure. I may just set different settings for the sole purpose of fucking with something new. :D

its probably the board in the furnace, mine was doing the same thing (at the old house) 2 years ago, well last winter (when i was selling it) the furnace didnt work at all, i replaced the board myself and it was perfect, and saved myself a ton of money, i had a technician look @ it and couldnt figure out how to put the new style board on, i am electrically challanged and i read the diagrams myself and figured it all out, i was quoted 800 to fix and it cost me 123 dollars w/ a for the new board

**Update** The cycle just kicked on again. I think I'm good!

Money saved = WIN!!!!!

BIIIIIIG THANK YOU to those of you who gave me info on who to call for help. Even though I was fortunate enough to not actually need that info this time around, I'm greatful to those of you who offered your connections! Thanks.
