Home A/C Issue

Hey guys -

I'm hoping someone has some experience with this. Our A/C stopped working today in the house. Early today I hosed it down since it had some cottonwood crap on it. Fast fwd several hours, we got home tonight and it was warm in the house and the unit was barely blowing out any air. I ended up doing some research and discovered the condenser in the house had approx 1/4" of ice and snow built-up on it. I got as much off as possible and hit the rest with a hair dryer (there was still some ice left). I tried firing it back up again, but the outside condenser started getting frost on it again so I just shut it down so I can let it thaw out entirely (did move more air though). I changed the filter since it was a couple months old, but is there anything else I can try if it still doesn't work tomorrow?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

i replace have replaced the capacitor twice now on mine. cheap, very eazy..problem solved. my issue was warm air, no coolant flow, fan was turning slow..

pull the major fuze/breaker before replacing. just shutting off the breaker in the panel did not kill the power completely for some reason..

A to Z Heating Cooling in taylor sells parts cheap. costs about $30??

Had a similar issue on our old house. Had to take out the furnace filter. I buy the cheapo Ace see thru filters. As one heating and cooling guy told me, 90% of his calls stem from filters. If you want to clean the air in the house get an air purifier, the filter is only meant to trap large objects from entering the unit

Thanks guys. I agree 04Goat, seems like maybe the filter was the issue. Restricted air flow caused the condenser to ice up. I thawed everything out and it's been back to normal with 58 degree air coming out of the vents with a new filter. Hopefully this does the trick...

I had to wait a good day for my lines to thaw out before the system would work again.

Just after I typed the original message my ac unit shit the bed. Compressor engages and nothing happens. Just a loud hissing sound. Already got a call into my hvac guy. Which I'm betting he wil suggest a total replacement of both our units.

Icing up like that normally means either 1 of 3 things:
- Outside condenser fins are plugged up with crap (bug pods, spider webs, etc.). Hose the piss out of all 4 sides, inc taking the cover off the side protecting the components.
- Furnace filter is dirty, plugged, or restricting too much air. Obviously, make sure all of your cold air returns are open & unblocked, etc.
- System is low on refrigerant.

If it does freeze up, just turn off the cooling on the thermostat and run the fan 24x7.

THIS !!!!
When I was the service manager for a new home development company
3/4 of my HVAC problems were caused by this
The $1.99 filters are the best

And turn your blower fan on constant
