Hmmmmm.....need to see what you guys and gals would do in this situation Im in.

if its a throw away job then i say go for it... spend the time with your old man and brother because if you dont you may regret it... especially if you have something else for income... family is much more important than a job that you dont intend to keep anyways... these trips are something you will never forget and something you will be able to tell your kids about... if you skip them to go to the job your not going to stay at anyways imo your a fool

I'd talk to your boss first and explain what's happening, then ask about the unpaid leave. Further, I'd accept only 1 trip with your father/bro, then ask if you can do one next year instead, so you have 1 a year.

I am making a conscious effort this year to spend more time with my dad. He's 72 and won't be around forever, so I can understand that. On hte flip side, not unlike you, if I don't work, I don't make any money either, so it has to be a balance....

Good luck to ya!

You guys are also forgetting... If he's not there... One less body they have working and helping everything move a long...

This is also true

I'm not sure of the work environment but I know at my last employer being one man down would fuck us and we would usually end up working til 2 am....

A friend of mine once told me, You will always have more money, never more time. I say Hell Yeah do it. I hate to say this and God knows I mean no disrespect from it but what if your father were to pass away 2 weeks after either one of those trips you would hate yourself forever. Tell work now and give them the heads up. That is quite a bit of time in advance, just ask for it unpaid.

Well here's my .02. If it's a throw away job, B.T.W kudos for having one. Not many people have a throw away job these days, don't say anything if your 95% sure your boss will decline the time. Just wait till the time comes and suddenly come up sick. You'll have to call him periodicly throughout the week but thats a small sacrafice. Then when you come back stop in at a MedPoint or whatever you have in your area with a back pain or whatever and get a doctors excuss. It'll cost you under a hundo and you'll have spent the irreplacable time with your family. Throw away or not jobs are hard to come by and IF your business is still slow you have the paycheck still rolling in. Now this might seem like a far fetch for both trips but it's better than just quiting or getting fired and if you say something then there's no excuse at all. In my experience if you have a doctors excuse then they usually honor it. Good luck hope it helps.

See if you can "bank" some overtime hours for these vacations you have planned..My boss lets me do it..It kinda sucks you dont get over time wage or really even paid for it...But you will cover your wage while gone and your boss gets extra work right now...I wouldnt risk my job for it though..We all know how tough it is out there right now.

My grandpa and a few uncles made a fishing trip like that..They only had great things to say about..you'll love this trip..

Good luck and hopefully it all works out for you..

I got some ideas.

your family goes on trips all the time, so missing out on one of them can be made up IMO.

Maybe instead of going on both, go to the next drop kick murphys concert with your mosh pit parents again, lol.

Come up with other local things you can do with your old man and Kevin, i'll keep Kimberly occupied.

Im running up to mid 5 to pick up more work, be ready, lol.

PS, take the scuba trip because you hate cold.

The "Once in a lifetime" vacations are hard to pass up, but feeding your family is hard to forget.

I have missed out on a bunch of fishing trips in the last couple years. We use to fly in to Canada for walleye, but life has become too busy lately. I loved those trips. Drinking beer, fishing and bullshiting with my Uncles and cousins.

I'm not changing my vacation up north with my girl and kids. No way I'm letting that one go. The trips with my dad and brother are the ones I wouldnt go on.

That damn income thing....man. It is important to put hot food on the table and keep the lights on. I hate money so much right now.

lol I mean pick either the fishing, or the scooba diving while still keeping the trip with your kids and gf.

are you familiar with FMLA?

If your child, wife, yourself, or mother, father has any sort of condition in which you need to care for them then you get 12 weeks off unpaid excused absence.

There is nothing your job can do about it either. they cannot fire you for it.

I would keep it on the dl though. Dont go back to work bragging about how great your time off was I mean afterall you were taking care of a family member remember?

tell your boss you dad has a terminal illness
and wants to take you and your brother on these trips to remember him by and that you will take the time off work unpaid ... worth a shot

Have you asked your boss? I wouldnt consider the time off "loss of income", since you wouldn't really be spending any money those weeks as it is. See if they'd let you take off some time unpaid, its not like they really lose much money without you being there as they arent paying you anyways.
