okay i got my motor together finally! now im curious will it hurt my engine if i fire it up without the trans hooked up to it i dont wanna do something and screw up a motor that i jus dumped a ton of money into putting it together

Safety Sam Says: Put the friggin' trans in.
HOWEVER, If the engine is out of the car, and you are NOT a dumbass, engines get started and run at 12-1500 RPM no-load every day. Get a pallet and build it up to the engine mounts or the pan rail with 2-bys. Make sure it's bolted or banded down securely. Or one of the STURDY engine storage racks. Hook up the starter and fuel, and hit it. Mount a small (1 gal) fuel tank up high and gravity feed the carb. If it's EFI, you'll need a pump. I've done it at home many times.

I have ran engines on solid mounts with no trans. Just dont rev it too much with no load on it.

no ive got two bolts in the back of the block where the trans bolts up hooked to the hoist, and i dont have the trans back yet wont have it back for another few weeks :( im jus itchin to hear it run finally

I must be a DUMBASS, how did you start a SBF with NO trans?

BELLHOUSING, all you have to do is bolt any sbf bell housing on the motor that works with your flexplate size and put a starter in it. I've started motors on engine stands this way. bolt bellhousing on, bolt the bell to the engine stand and fired them up. Exact same principle as a run stand just cheap and a lil more dangerous.

I'm assuming his bellhousing is on the trans. (Allthrottle)

no my bell is off the trans i took it off because a family member told me i could fire it up without the trans hooked to it, and i bolted it in it car doin it a redneck janky way because i did not know you could gravity feed it so i hooked it to my fuel system... motor is back out of car now... doin a k member swap this weekend... motor will then stay on the stand till my trans comes home...

you can start it without a trans hooked to it...

Depends on which trans you have. Not all have a removable bell. Then again, if you have extra C-4 or stick bellhousings laying around and the right diameter and counterweighted flywheel, you would be fine.
Be careful if your removing the Bell on a C-4 trans. If you pull the pump out accidentally with it (even just a little) you most likely will drop thrust washers in the transmission and damage it when you bolt the bell back on. I repair C-4's for this exact problem for customers often.
