Help wanted selecting a rifle.

I know my way around shotguns pretty well, but I'm lost when it comes to rifles. What I would want is a rifle that is reliable, easy to maintain, parts availability, low ammo costs, mid-priced/cheap, drop a zombie at 150+ yards, etc. What should I be looking for?

.223/ 30-06 / just depends on what kind of stopping power you want. The. 223 round is pretty decent on prices 30-06 is a bit over kill but great gun for hunting with stopping power. There are a ton of rifles out there to "zombie" kill just depends on your budget and how much "cool" facter you want.
 
30.30s will do what you want. I bought both of mine for about $200 each and ammo is about $10 a box on sale. Get a Marlin, easier to maintain and parts are cheap too. With a scope and using the Hornady LeverEvolution ammo ($20/box) you'll easily drop zombies at 200 + yards. Also, they have low recoil and are the coolness of the "cowboy gun". The 30.06 has way more power (than you need) and range but for many people the recoil is troublesome. Haven't owned a .223 but I know they are expensive to buy.
 
This is like opening up Pandora's box, gonna get a LOT of different answers. Your basic AR or even an AK will work for the needs you listed.

Agree.

OP - you need more requirements defined. Are you looking for a traditional hunting rifle that can also kill zombies, or an assault rifle that can also hunt? Must be semi-auto, or is bolt/single shot OK? What's your specific price range?

For a hunting rifle, I'd suggest something like a Remington 700 or a Marlin .30-30 with a decent scope + iron sites as a backup.
For an assault rifle, this is going to spawn a 100 page debate.... but will likely be limited by your funds. "black rifles" are not cheap. I'd prefer a HK MR762A1 or MR556A1, but that's just me.
 
30-06 is the most versatile caliber you can pick up......you can hunt anything from a varmit to a caribou......or in your case 300 pound walking dead.

Remington, Winchester or Ruger......pick your poison.

This! Because you can literally walk into any hardware drug store meijers walmart dunhams ect and buy ammo. Andits good at a distance too
 
30-06 for a ALL around rifle from target to hunting, cheap to shoot and easy to get ammo, very large range of ammo to chose from
.223 for more of a target, varmint
.243, .308 are good all around rifles as well
I say Savage all the way on any cal

I'm leaning towards an assault/military semi-auto. Price range 600-800, depends on weapon. Wouldn't want to hot dog it up, just improve the sights.

I have one of those too. I've always been told how rare they are compared to the other Remington rifles.

For basic rifle shooting, just get a .223 or .308 and be done with it. Hell, an AR is probably a good choice, just get a long barrel and build it to suit what you want.
 
You can get a nice AR at most sporting goods stores on sale for around $700. .223 is really cheap too, as are most of the parts and accessories for those guns.

x2 AR's are extremely accurate and easy to work on. With nothing more than a nice scope you will have everything you need.
