Help - Transmission fluid

Hydraulic Jack

Forum Member
My son Jamie (fiveohcrazy) told me to post this here......I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel. Mike Ridings is building me a torque converter. When I change the TC I will be changing tranny fluids also.......I have a 5-45RFE transmission. It calls for ATF-4. I bought a set of filters and 12 quarts of Royal Purple Max ATF. It seems that Royal Purple doesn't have the "official" ATF-4 rating. I hear good things about Royal Purple products but I don't want to screw up my transmission....Can anyone tell me if they have successfully used this in a Chrysler transmission?.....I am not against selling the Royal Purple and buying the correct fluid if this isnt the right stuff..........HJ

ATF+ 4 has a different friction modifier packaged then most other conventional transmission fluids. Not using a ATF + 4 fluid can cuase harsh converter apply and shutter.

I did not know that. How do they deal with the extra silicates in dex/merc 3 equipped transmissions then ? Is that fluid to slippery for those applications ?

They make a half a dozen, the basics for automatics are:
ATF
Low viscosity ATF
And a fluid for drag racing with very low amount of friction modifier-similar to hydraulic oil

Their basic ATF covers all of the following
AUTOMOTIVE

• GM DEXRON® III-H
• Ford MERCON® & MERCON V
• Chrysler ATF+4®
• Toyota Type T-III and T-IV
• Honda Z-1 (Not CVT)
• Diamond SP II & III (Mitsubishi/Hyundai/Kia)
• Mazda ATF-III, ATF-MV
• Subaru ATF, ATF-HP
• Nissan Matic D, J & K
• Idemitsu K-17
• BMW LA2634
• LT 71141
• Audi G-052-025-A2 & G-052-162-A1
• Volvo 97340
• MB 236.1, 236.2, 236.5, 236.6, 236.7, 236.9 & 236.10
• JWS 3309
• NAG 1
• ETL-7045E, ETL-8072B & N402
• Mopar AS68RC

HEAVY-DUTY, ON- and OFF-ROAD

• Allison C-4, TES 389
• ZF TE-ML 03D, 04D, 09, 14A, 14B, 14C, 16L, 17C
• Voith 55.6335.XX (G607, G1363)

POWER STEERING

• DEXRON®
• MERCON®
• ATF+4

*Not for use with CVT or Ford Type F applications.

SERVICE LIFE
Recommended for 50,000 miles in severe service* and 100,000 miles in normal service;* or per vehicle manufacturer-recommended intervals, whichever is longer.

All their specs are on their website: Amsoil.com

I cannot answer your question Sean, but Amsoil is a very small company that takes pride in their product. Drop a email to them with your question-even with your phone# and one of their engineers that develop their oil will call you.

I am going to drop them a line. I know first hand the issue with mixing the wrong fluid with Penstar transmission is. TCC issue. Big time.
