Help Please….

I have a 2004 Crown Vic Police Interceptor with 64,000 miles.
I just bought, & the steering was pretty “tight” (hard to turn
the steering wheel). I’ve had this condition on other CVPI’s
I’ve owned & simply would drain some of the power steering fluid,
replace with fresh fluid & problem would be solved.

Not this time. So I changed the power steering pump - &
nothing changed. So I unplugged the wire connecter plug
on the steering rack, again no change. This car has the speed
power steering system on it (you get less power steering at
higher speeds).

I’m at a loss of what to do or check at this point. Any ideas guys?

You dont think the sterring colum or intermediate shaft joint is binding do you? Does it make any noise?

Hmmm, no noise, but this is an area I didn't think of.

If it was this, what would you do to it? Hose it down with lube?

Ehh I believe typically they have to be replaced when they start failing.

Ya, I was kinda of afraid you’d say that.

I’m so poor I can’t afford to pay attention!

Any idea what those cost? I fear its something
like that or possibly the rack itself.

Yeah maybe someone who has more experence with these (I know there are some crown vic guru's here) will have some more helpful input....I will tell you the intermediate shaft is best case scenerio between thatand the rack...Hopefully the rack is still ok.

I would have to go with the steering gear.

It was recommended to lube (PB Blaster) the
steering shaft - that did it! It is so nice when
its the easy cheap fix............and very rare!

just keep it lubed and keep an eye on it, if it develops any play, replace

You're on borrowed time with it... I seen this happen more times then ever with cab companies...

How much does that steering shaft cost?

Lower Ball joints can bind as they go bad on those cars as well. Seen it a few times.
