Help - Chevy '99 Tahoe is dumping fuel...

I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe (police package),
350, 165,000 miles. It wouldn't start the other day
so I (I know I shouldn't have) sprayed starting
fluid and since then I can now smell gas out of the
tail pipe & shes using twice the gas she use to.

Anybody want to guess what may have happened?
And what should I try to repair the problem?

Thanks guys for your help.

Does this have the spider injection system? If yes then it could be that an injector is stuck open. If this is the case according to GM TSB you need to have the injectors flushed and if that doesn't work replace the spider assy. I hope this helps...

I have never seen one stick open/ I have seen them stick closed. What I have seen is that the fuel supply line will crack dumping fuel in the motor.

I agree with Sean. The injectors usually stick closed, not 100%, but usually. Those motors are a !@%$!#^Y@%!$ to pull the intake, I'd try to service it on the motor, the injection system can largely, if not totally be serviced w/o pulling the aluminum intake.

IF it is a stuck open injector, you can now get individual injectors instead of complete spider setup. It's a $50 fix instead of hundreds for OEM replacement.

The CPI setup likes a little preventative maintenance. Put a container of Techron fuel additive in the tank every month. Some recommend doing it every 3rd tank. Seems to eliminate sticky injectors. With the amount of ethanol in regular fuel these days (a solvent to oil) it's probably more needed than the MTBE days.

WAIT... I just re-read your post. How much starting fluid did you use????? Any roughness when the motor is running. How's power?

I hope you didn't crack a piston with a bad ether pop...

Lindertech seels an affordable replacement spider. I would not go tossing parts at it until you did some diagnostic testing first. MY inclination is distributor cap honestly. Common problem with the cold weather and moisture.
