This is the second year that Habitat Detroit will be involved with the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. Run for a Reason provides non-profit, charitable organizations the opportunity to piggy back on this event and raise funds for their organization. This year we have joined forces with Habitat Oakland County.

Don't let the name "Marathon" scare you away from becoming a participant; there is something for everyone, including:

* International Marathon (26.2 miles, crossing the Ambassador Bridge into Canada and coming back through the one-mile Detroit/Windsor tunnel beneath the Detroit River)
* Marathon for wheelers and hand cyclists with disabilities (26.2 miles)
* Five-person team relay of 26.2 miles (distances of relay segments vary from 3-7 miles)
* Half-marathon run (13.1 miles)
* Half-marathon competitive and non-competitive walks (13.1 miles)
* 5K Fun Run and Fitness Walk (3.1 miles)
* 5K Kids Fun Run (3.1 miles)

The Detroit Free Press is a leader in participating with charities and organizations in public service projects to help improve the quality of life for all in our community and beyond. Charities are invited to Run for a Reason to raise awareness and funds for their cause. In 2008, 13 charities participated and raised over $600,000.

Note: The registration fee goes directly to the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon for the administration of the event. The funds raised by participants or fund raisers can be designated to their non-profit (ex. Habitat for Humanity). All of these proceeds go to the designated non-profit.

Coaches and Team Captains Are Needed

* Coaches work with their team captains to encourage fund raising. This person must have a motivational spirit and encourage outstanding fund raising efforts. A coach would recruit 5 or more team captains. Click here for more information.

*
Team Captains are needed to create a team of 5 or more race/walk participants or fundraisers who will solicit their friends, families, co-workers, church members, club members, poker buddies, golf buddies, fraternity brothers/sorority sisters, business customers, etc. Click here for more information.

Join us for the Run for a Reason Rally on August 22!

Habitat for Humanity Detroit and Habitat for Humanity Oakland County are partnering up with Carlson Marketing and T.G.I.Friday's® for a fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the restaurant chain's Dearborn location - 720 Town Center Drive (near Fairlane Town Center Mall). Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the Habitat affiliates, volunteer / sponsorship opportunities, the Run for a Reason program and Habitat ReStore operations.

In addition, for small donations, participants will be able to: assist Carlson Marketing in the construction of wall sections that they will use in the construction of a Habitat house during a "blitz build" in mid-September; soak a Habitat staff person with a water balloon drop; and, for a $10 donation, receive a coupon for either a dessert or appetizer at T.G.I.Friday's®. The restaurant will also be offering a $5 lunch special, with all of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity.

Also, learn more about the Habitat process of providing low-income working families the opportunity to purchase their own home and take their families out of often substandard and unhealthy living conditions. Give a Hand Up for others to succeed in life; not a hand out.
