Gun registration question.

So my pistol is registered in Illinois but it's not registered here in Michigan. I'm going for my cpl class next week. Do I need to register here before hand or is it something they do at the class?

You should have already done that when you moved back to Michigan. You need to go to the PD and get that taken care of asap.

I think I need to find my registration from Illinois first where I bought it then bring it to the pd.

It's already registered in Illinois. They have a foid card that you have to get in order to purchase a gun. In order to get that card you have to get a complete background check and everything. So it's not like it's purchased of the street. I already called the pd station and they said I need to come get a purchase permit and fill it out and get it notarized. But where the seller signs it I have to put that I'm transferring it. What a pain. If I can find the paperwork where it's registered in Illinois I'm hoping I just go in there and have them transfer it.

I have just moved to Michigan from another state. How much time do I have to register my pistols?

MCL 28.422 Upon establishing legal residency, you should immediately contact your local law enforcement agency, pass the basic safety questionnaire, and complete a License to Purchase.

But I don't need to purchase it. I already own it so why would I need a purchase permit?

Because Michigan doesn't have an FOID. The purchase permit includes the "quiz" and background check. Michigan doesn't know/care if Illinois allowed you to own the gun. They want to do their own check.

My question is there a transfer permit or just a purchase permit? I don't want to go in there and get a purchase permit get it notarized and everything when I'm not purchasing a gun.

I know a guy that can answer this question.

The police department isn't steering you wrong. Do what they say and you're good. You don't even have to take the gun in anymore.

Trust me it's something that I've been meaning to do but I keep forgetting..lol

I know, it sucks. They make it so difficult with hours too. I've been with out my CPL since Feb. No time to drive up there to renew it!

I don't think they're steering me wrong but sometimes I just question if they understand what I'm trying to do. The other problem is they're only open W-F 9-4. How in hell am I going to be able to go there and get this taken care of....Sheez talk about making it a pain in the ass..

I know you literally have to take a half day just to register a gun if you dont work in the same city as your PD. Total pain in the ass. When you go up there to get the permit explain it to them again and I'm sure they'll help you out.

As far as I know it's just the purchase permit from you to you. A lot of people have to do that also when they inherit a gun that's not registered.
