Gun Guys: Glock 23 vs. S&W M&P?

When it comes to a carry gun, there should be no question as too which should win the reliability/trigger debate in your head. Reliability all the time.

I've owned a ton of semi auto hand guns, almost every glock ever made including the 17L and the 36, ton's of XD's, Keltec's, kimbers, 1911's, and I've always come back to the Glock. But I've never owned a M&P for two very simple reasons: triggers sucked and reliability issues when they were first introduced. Now I'm sure they've been improved on and corrected in later models, but I'm not taking the risk of getting one that's junk. Why would you?

If you want better ergonomics and interchangeable back straps, buy a Springfield XDm. If your point of aim is good with the glock and you shoot it well, buy that. But IMO I'd stay away from the M&P's.

Good luck.

I have one of the first 10,000 M&P .40's ever made (S/N 9416) and have NEVER had a FTF or FTE.

It did stovepipe once, when a 16yo girl shot it and limp-wristed it, and it did have one failure to load a reload, that was measured to be .025 too long.

I have WELL over 10,000 rounds through this gun now (6 years old) and love it, reliability is not an issue. I have never heard of reliability issues associated with M&P's. I just found out yesterday too, that with nothing more than a barrel change, my .40 full size becomes a .357 SIG, and with a few other parts, can shoot 9mm.

Dr Gary K. Roberts had a little something to say about M&P's in this article:

I'm not making it up.

ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - Every gun carried by Atlanta police is under recall, and Tuesday it was determined why.

The recall was initiated by the company, Smith and Wesson and was started because of problems with the triggers on the guns.

Atlanta police officials called the move an upgrade and declined to comment on the recall.

So far, about 400 guns have been changed out. In all, the recall involves about 1,600 Atlanta Police Department issued weapons.

But like I said, I'm sure that's all been corrected now and the new ones are fine.

Too bad they don't say what exactly they recalled the guns for. Might have been simply too light of a trigger and too many cops were shooting themselves in the foot.

Same here, I've shot a couple of M&P's also and they just don't shoot well for me. I've given them a fair chance I'd say. All the triggers sucked except on Brian's, and I know he's done work on his.
I don't get why people say glocks are fugly. I think they're the hotness....

Sorry man... you know I'm looking into one as well, but they aren't pretty by any means.. I can't believe anyone would say they're beautiful, but that's not the reason people like them. A Glock is what you carry, a 1911 is what you show people :)

I actually use to owned one of the Glock 36's that was a recall gun. Bought it new, it jammed at least once or twice per mag. Firing line returned it no questions asked. Got one of the ones post recall and it was great. I'd love to own another one.

Clearly you've gone to the swifster school of reading now Mike, and totally missed this: "But like I said, I'm sure that's all been corrected now and the new ones are fine."

FYI - I contacted the Atlanta PD to ask about the recall, and this is what was sent back to me.

Hello,

The recall was not for the M&P it was for the S&W 4006. The reason it was recalled was because the frame of the 4006 was cracking after shooting many times.

Thank you,

Had my M&P 40 fullsize for about a year and 1500 rounds and love it. Zero problems. Fit and balance is exellent.

Just for an update (As if anyone cares): I went with the M&P 40c. Very happy with it so far and have about 500rds through it without issue. I was very suprised at its accuracy in the 7 - 10yrd range with such a short barrel. The action and trigger are really starting to smoothe out now also. Conceals well in my Comp-Tac IWB rig. In fact, I'm so impressed with the M&P line that I'm looking at a full size Pro model in .40 also.

Thanks again for the input.

I was having this same debate, and went with the Glock. Love it so far. Only have 100 rds through it. Going to put another 100 through tonight.

They are both great pistols. My dad got the Glock 23 Gen 4 and really likes it. I like the extra capacity of the 23 but dont care to much for the trigger feel (not pull). I will probably do a trigger job on the M&P down the road but for now its fine. She's a snappy little bitch with 165gr loads and after 200 rounds during one range trip, my hand was kinda sore the next day. Never had that with my Taurus PT101. I guess i'm getting old and growing a vagina.
