My point was that some departments could benefit by taking on some volunteers. The point about Detroit is that there are fewer people living in the city paying taxes, so naturally funding for -everything-, including, police/fire will decrease.
 
Not gonna happen. We are a professional union, no volunteer guys allowed. The volunteer concept only works in small, newer communities that can't afford to pay for a full-time prfessional department, not a large ghetto city. We are the busiest fire department in the world. You could not organize, or even get volunteer guys to do our job. Not only that, but increased response times and pure lack of fire experience would hinder any attemps. But, like alot of people, you have no idea how hard the police & firemen of Detroit bust their asses. Only to get laid-off, budgets slashed, not just because of people moving out of the city, but the entire state. No economy & no jobs=no state revanue sharing. But we'll just cut public safety whilre people's lives & property suffer. Oh, by the way, Detroit leads the entire nation in fire fatalities, so by understaffing, what do you think will happen to that statistic? You're mentality is the same of the people that re-elected Kwame. Nice job, he's really done a great job just like Granholm will do.
