I'm an asshole because I don't mind paying a few extra dollars in taxes to help the poor and feel more people, in general, should spend some of their time volunteering? :dontknow:

I pontificate about corporate IT standards, vendor best practices, configuration inefficiencies, etc. I'm confident that will leave an indelible mark on a poor childs life, somewhere.

That's not what it looks like. In any event, kindly continue writing checks to the poor, especially to the Medicaid Medical Welfare Fund. It is desperately needed and greatly appreciated by those of us who are in the trenches each day, caring for those in need and bearing the brunt of sophomoric and banal commentary of people who do, well, whatever the hell it is you spend your day doing.

I can't beleive anyone would stick up for someone who has done NOTHING for our state in 4 years! Michigan just keeps going down the shitter everyday she is in office. I don't know if Devos is THE answer, but I don't think we can waste any more time guessing. It's been about 30 years since any cities have laid-off cops & firemen, and it just started happening over the past 2 years. Things are bad when public safety is being cut in any city, let alone the worst city in America. Detroit laid off cops & firemen last year, Warren laid off firemen 2 years ago, any many other departments are facing crucial budget cuts right now. It really doesn't bother people until they have an emergency and have to wait too long for someone to show and either something bad happens, or their house burns down.

My comment was related to the state sponsored program you mentioned. The point is that some people are fortunate to be in a position where they can be a blessing to an underserved segment of the population, and there is no shame in doing so. And such work should be encouraged. Is that so terrible?

But sit back and think for a second:

Why is Michigan in the economical situation it is now?
Governor? Lack of educated citizens? Corporations moving?

My personal view (puts on flame suit)

Michigan's economy was based on manufacturing. Just like Wisconsin's is based on agriculture. WE grew up looking at our parents, with good paying jobs and benefits, with only a high school education. They took jobs at a plant somewhere and frugally spent their money. We were raised thinking I can just follow in their footsteps and everthing will be fine.
Well those jobs are long long gone and not returning.

Can't blame corporate america! They are doing what any of us would do in their shoes, try to make more profit. Plus how many of you still own Stock in a company that has left michigan to open plants elsewhere? Blame yourself!

My father retired from Chrysler and he made damn sure none of his kids followed in his footsteps. He knew these jobs were not going to be there.

So why does michigan have this problem?
Look in the mirror Michigan.


What we need is a business man to turn this around and bring companies to Michigan. I don't care if he did sent 1500 jobs to China! Hell When the Germans bought Chrysler they laidoff/fired 44,000 people. Where's the outrage?

Michigan needs to fundamentally change the viewpoint of its citizens. Sure education of the youth is great... DDown the road. What about those who lost jobs and are scraping to get by? Trying to make ends meet by putting their house up for sale in this pathetic market.

If you can improve the former factory workers life in michigan, you will win the election. Plain and simple.
 
I don't have an answer why MI is so shitty. All I can say is that Granholm had her chance, and she didn't deliver. I cannot risk giving her my vote, hoping that she will deliver in another 4 years.

I think it's a shame that MI cannot compete with the rest of the country. America's economy as a whole is doing extremely well, and MI is the dump. It's just too bad. I really hope I don't have to move out of state after I get my degree, because I truly love Michigan.

Time for a change. DeVos FTW

Blame the people who live in those cities who voted against raising taxes to pay for those services. BTW our village gets by just fine with volunteer firefighters. Since none of their budget is used for salaries (except for the chief) there is plenty of money to acquire the latest and greatest equipment.

The city of Detroit has had a large population decrease in the last several years, so it only stands to reason that they now require fewer city employees.

They can take advantage of our underutilized mass transit system known as DDOT and MDOT. There are tons of state sponsored programs to assist people in getting job training and job placement. People who want jobs usually have one.

Precisely. People don't seem to realize that the goose that layed the golden egg is dead and buried. The expectation that you could have relatively no skills and command a salary comparable to someone with a masters degree needs to change.

This is an item Grandholm discussed during the debates. They've set up a large fund to help retrain those folks who've lost their manufacturing jobs.

Nope. I don't get paid enough as it is (but I am part time, and I am a full time student). I am in school to get a good paying job. I am just happy that I have a job to go to.:badass:

I am not sure that I blame Granholm for the decline, but she didn't do anything for it to get better, IMO.

I'd love to say that DeVos will do better because he's a businessman, but the problem there is that right now, he tells his people to do something and they do it. In government, you tell someone to do something and it has to go through sub-committee hearings, other departments, blah blah blah. It'll never get through the beaurocratic red tape. It's set up that way. And the president's have the same problem I feel. After 9/11 they shoulda nuked the shit outtta those half-assed countries, that would've really "smoked em out" to quote GW. :dontknow:

At least then they'd have a really good reason to blame him for something.... :D
