got my first ar

You're an even bigger "dumbass" if you think a .223/.556 round will penetrate less then #4 Buck. 62gr @ 3200fps. or 21 .24in pellets@1300fps. Hi-power rifles are generally not a good HD setup unless you live in a rural setting where over-penetration is not an issue. If I lived in a shared-wall dwelling I would not hesitate for a second to load up a pump 12ga with birdshot. May not kill, but take a round or two of birdshot to the face at 12 feet and see if you don't seriously consider changing whatever course of action you are pursuing.

At the face, eh? Good luck with that under extreme duress cowboy.

AR's and the like are fantastic home defense weapons. Especially those in a pistol or 14.5" configuration. The chances of an injury from an over penetration resulting from a 5.56 round are a very low percentage. I'd much rather have the increased magazine capacity and the ability for quick follow up shots than a shot gun. But that's me.

When I use to keep a shotgun for HD, it was: 00, slug, 00, slug, 00. Repeat until full. I wanted the ability to shoot someone through a door.

I wouldn't use #4 either. Not enough penetration. Why do people insist on using something that DOESN'T PENETRATE when the whole goal is go as deep as possible in your target? You have to STOP the threat which means killing them or incapacitating them, not just 'making them think twice about breaking into your house'. If they are armed as well, that's the difference between them hitting the ground or them hitting the trigger at your or your family multiple times.

Even a small rifle round has the potential to go through a ton of walls if you set the shot up right. It's not like its going to stop on the second or third (or 4th or 5th) wall. But you have a bigger chance of the smaller round deflecting or breaking up than you do with a bigger pistol bullet or a slug. Especially with a JHP, but some tests have shown those not to penetrate as deep as you would like.

Either way, handgun, shotgun, rifle, the last thing you should be worried about if it gets to that point is over penetration. I'd be far more worried about under-penetration.

Any round that is going to penetrate someone deep enough to reach vital organs is going to penetrate walls. Simple as that. Just aim carefully and be aware of your surroundings. I wouldn't suggest shooting through doors Wyatt Earp. lol

Shooting through an interior door to stop a threat against your life is illegal? Huh. Guess all the cops and law enforcement that I've taken training through are wrong. Thank God you're here.

I think some of you live in the movies. lol

I think some of your need to take some training in self defense and learn the ways to defend your family and your safe room if you're ever in a situation like that. I highly recommend taking "DRAWING & SHOOTING FROM CONCEALMENT" at the firing line. Get some education before you knock these strategies.

I suppose I will have to.

I just don't see how shooting through a door at someone is a safe way to defend your home. You can't see who is behind that door, if they are armed, where they are exactly behind that door or where your family or other occupants are in the house or near that door. Just seems very hollywood to me.

Obviously that is not something to do if your family is not in the room with you. Have you taken you CPL class yet? Did you read any of the home defense books the NRA gives you when you do so?

The idea is that if your entire family is in the safe room, an adult is on the phone with the police to tell them you're in a safe room, and the intruder is trying to gain access to the safe room you fire a shot center of mass at the door to deter them from gaining entry. It's not a tactic used to kill someone, it's used to stop the threat.

Ok. I can see that scenario. If I am in a room with everyone, I've called the police and the intruder is trying to gain access to that room or starts shooting at the door, then yeah I'm shooting through it also.

I was under the impression you guys were talking about blasting through doors if you hear something outside your room or outside your front door. I'm thinking wtf? I'm glad I don't live with any of you and come home late one night to a shootout.

Message clear now. :D

My girlfriends brother stopped by in the middle of the night to drop something off from work, he came in the house and said "Don't shoot it's me, John". She wasn't home and forgot to tell me he was coming by, but me or the dog never even woke up.

Talk is talk. But this guy went out and did it. His results speak for themselves...

Moving away from rifle rounds takes us from fascinating discoveries into the realm of mythbusting. Handgun rounds, for instance, may penetrate less than rifle rounds--but only if the rifle rounds in question are full-power ball ammo. The relatively slow speed and heavy weight of handgun bullets make them a poor choice for limiting interior wall penetration, which is why professional door-kicker types have abandoned pistol-caliber submachineguns in favor of .223 carbines.

Shotguns may be the most powerful repeating shoulder-fired gun available, but when stoked with 00 buckshot they are certainly not a low-penetration option. In fact, the way the pellets spread out after passing through intermediate barriers makes the safety of anyone or anything within three rooms of a shotgun blast highly dubious.

Yeah, so I'm not just talking out of my ass and this isn't shit I've seen in a movie. These are methods that I've been taught by cops and swat guys in classes I've taken. It's common sense.

But I'm sure "c0ncEpT" knows more than any of them.

You guys got it all wrong. I sleep with my chainsaw. That way when someone breaks in, I fire that bad boy up and am ready to cut off some limbs. I even have a tactical bar with a swat style strobe flashlight attached, so I can blind the intruder, then proceed to have a bloodbath rave style party like in the movie blade.

:badass:

I just got done installing bullet proof pull down shielding on the inside of my car like the punisher, and I put a toilet on the roof of my house in case I ever need to drop it on a russian like the boondock saints.

 Now were talking!!!!

You're a dumbass if you're going to use birdshot to defend your house.

maybe but its what i keep in the gun, 3inch nitro-mag birdshot is what i had laying around.. getting hit with that in the size of this tiny house would STOP them i think. but that gun is right by the front door i sleep with the pistol on my night stand.

and like i said the main reason i dont keep it here is the fear of it not being here when i go out at night or 2 work. way to easy to get stuff lost where i live. so i keep it in a safe place away from this city. the wall thing is just my extra excuse of why its not here.
