My tow truck (1996 chevy 3500HD 6.5L turbo) has a 4l80E trans with the parking brake drum on the tailshaft.......anyways, my reverse went out a few months back and i've been forced to use my back-up truck. My back up truck is a gas truck and is killing my wallet....... I'm looking to purchase a used trans to get my diesel back on the road until i can get my old one rebuilt.
I called the local salvage yard and they told me it was a 1996 only. Is this true? If anyone knows the interchange please let me know.......thanks, jamison

1996 is a bastard year. If you had a competent helper you could go through the 96 valvebody and I am fiarly sure it will work in the 95-99 cases.

I was talking to someone who says that the only difference from a 96 to a 97 is the routing of the cooling lines.......any fact to that? Or is it in the valve body?

all 4l80e transmissions are all some what interchangeable.
the biggest difference in your application is the length of the output shaft. the brake drum version is a specific length, so you must start with a 2 wl dr
4l80e with a bk drum on the back. that is unless your going to completely disassemble the unit and swap outputs.
that would most likely be more money and work than fixing your unit.

Call Howard.734-529-5934. You have to talk to Howard only. He is the only one that can help at that number. He might even have one & he could tell what interchanges.
