she never broke up with your buddy. she said that to try and hook up with you on the down low. You were smart and didn't take the opportunity and now it's gone. MOST chicks under 25 are crazy. They play games and what not. Some are worth playing the game back at them to get a piece of ass but most of the time it's not. I played the game, got mine, and 2 weeks later am still being haunted by this 21 year old who won't stop calling me.
 
You should definitely tell your buddy what's been going on. If he's a good friend of yours, maybe you can save him some heartache in the future by telling him what a hoebag he's with. :D
