WHAT IS GHETTO? I got a ton of friends whom just so happend to be WHITE and its amazing how they(not all but some) associate GHETTO with BLACK! Now while this doesnt offend me it has me LMAO because i see and know how and where they live and frankly in most cases its THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK!

So my question is which is more ghetto of the two?

#1 living in a terrible neighborhood(detroit) with a nice house, car and able to afford all the bells and whistles.

#2 living in the surburbs in a nice home, while the home is nice on the outside the inside reeks dog/cat shit nasty ass carpet and not a hairless place to sit in the home!

PLEASE LET LOOSE WITH THE OPPINIONS!

Ghetto:

1. a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.
2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.
3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.
4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.

Origin:
1605–15; < It, orig. the name of an island near Venice where Jews were forced to reside in the 16th century < Venetian, lit., foundry for artillery (giving the island its name), n. deriv. of ghettare to throw < VL *jectāre; see jet 1

Tell your friends you are Black, not Jewish

I think GHETTO is more referred to as like detroit rather than a suburb...a nice house in the burbs that someone doesnt clean and is full of shit and hair is just pure lazyness, not ghetto. To me ghetto refers to bad areas(areas with run down houses broken windows ect...

ghetto is when your house looks like its going to collapse at any moment but you have a brand new escalade sittin on 30 inch rims....

LOL, ED i know the definition and meaning! But if ghetto is only defined by location why when U see a car with the big wheels sitting 5ft in the air i always hear the term Ghetto?

I don't think that's necessarily a racial thing, plenty of white people live in the ghetto and drive donk style.

I think there's two different things being discussed here.

1) When someone says ghetto while talking about a location: I personally think of run-down areas of Detroit that I wouldn't want to be stranded in without an armored division no matter what time of day. Even if you have the nicest house on the block with all the bells and whistles, it doesn't matter. It's the current conditions of your surroundings, the crime rate, etc. Areas that come to mind: Livernois south of 96 (sorry Reiko), 6 mile just west of Mound, some parts of Pontiac, etc. Granted, there are worse places to be mentioned. But, I fortunately haven't seen them yet. When rolling through though, the windows are up, doors are locked and I avoid losing momentum as much as possible.

2) When someone refers to something as being ghetto: This is where the stereotypes come in. Usually, it describes something you would see in the ghetto due to the negative perceptions of the lifestyle of the people that live there. For example, the stereotype that you're likely to see cars with more money invested in stereo equipment, wheels, etc. than the original purchase price of the car. Therefore, it gets passed off as or called "ghetto." It might not necessarily be something materialistic. It could be a behavior or attitude - again likely found in areas as described above (like moneypit's kool-aid example).

In some respects, it's just how language evolves IMO...like the word gay for example. It used to predominantly describe someone as being happy. Now, it's used to describe sexual preference. But, because that sexual preference wasn't (or isn't still in some sense) socially accepted by the majority, the negative connotation associated with it has come to give it a 3rd, negative meaning (like when someone doesn't like something and they say, "that's gay").
