I learned a technique in college and have since never gotten a cold if I cold it at the onset. Take and pour yourself a shot of vodka, quality of vodka doesn't matter here, gargle with it then spit or drink if you are so inclined.

I did this in the morning before class, so I spit the vodka out myself. Although thinking back on that class perhaps I should have drank the shot. All the same that always works for me.
