Generators?

Anyone here know anyone (or any sponsors) who sells and installs whole house generators? Looking for my pops and don't want him getting taken. Thanks, bitches!
 
Thats what i have at my house. Very good quality! If he plans on staying where he is at for a while pony up the extra cash for the whole house switch. Well worth the investment.
 
Generac. 8kw will do most unless you have a huge AC unit Ect. They are aBout 21-2400 plus 2000 to install i believe. They run on natural gas and are not terribly loud. They are not that hard to instal yourself either if you are electrically smart. Run your wire and power tie in with out back feeding into the pole!!, pour a concrete pad, tap into gas line, and a few odds and ends. After pad is ready, it's a 6-8hr instal I think my buddy said.

Most manufacturers require a certified electrician to inspect and then call into the manufacturer to activate a PIN to make the generator "live" and to start the warranty. Obviously this was done to keep from having your typical home handyman from installing the units falsely and risking injury to lineman. Most will void the warranty if not installed by an electrican.

Also an 8kW unit will not power a whole house panel. That is only 35 amps of 220 service.....not even an oven and the AC at the same time.

They are 50amp and 10 circuits for 2-2400. Gas line needs to be inspected and I believe connected by gas company or or maybe just a licensed contractor. The electrical either needs to be inspected and signed off by licensed contractor to make sure its not going to back feed. I don't think it has to be done by electrician, just inspected and approved. Not sure tho.
 
Gas line from the meter to the generator doesn't need to be installed by gas company, any one can do it, as long as it holds the 24hr air test required by some city's,not all require it.

But. 99% of the gas meters on residential homes will not support the required amount of gas to run the generator. So the gas service needs to be upgraded. At minimum the manifold and meter, depending on where you live, the line from the gas main might need to be upgraded as well, depended on the pressure where you live. 2lbs in a 7/8 service line will not support a generator,as an example.
Oh and none of that work is free.
 
Thanks for all the advice. I'm even more lost than I was before. I'll compare these notes with his to see what the sales guys he's talked to have suggested.
