Garage Heater Question

I am tossing around ideas for the garage heaters. It needs to be propane and I want radiant.

I was thinking of getting (2) 30K btu ventless wall ones that you see at HD. I'd put them on opposite sides of the garage. They are rated for 900 sq ft each, so that would be sufficient.

But wasn't sure if that would be too high power for my garage and make one side real hot and the other side not so much.

I would like to avoid any kind of venting, so I am trying to stay away from the tube heaters right now.

My garage is 1250 sqft w/ 12 foot ceilings.

You guys have any thoughts???

I was going to post something very similar. I'm finally finishing mine also. I want to do a natural gas one though....not sure what to use. Mine is approximately 700sq ft with 10' ceilings. I was going to use a hanging furnace in one corner.
 
Why not go with a standard home furnace? I picked up a good used home Furnace from a guy who does Heating and Cooling. Cost me $50 bucks. I see them in the paper, or craigs list all the time. Mine's been working great for about 6yrs. now. I don't leave mine run all the time, but even in the dead of winter when I turn it on, Ive got my coat off within about 10 minutes. I'm about 650sq. ft. with 10ft. ceilings. Plus you have a stat, and no stink.
 
My experience in the past with the "warm air" is that it creates a lot of condensation on my tools and stuff, where the radiant doesn't do that.

Maybe you can use one of those if you mount it high up somehow? I was told it was very dangerous to mount one near the floor, as gasoline and other combustable garage vapors collect near the floor.
 
You will need to mount it from the ceiling, away from any flammable fumes. Explosions are really sweet, but not in my garage please. I have never had any problems with condensation.
 
He had a party in the middle of the winter everyone had to smoke in the garage ( with the garage door half open ) and it was not that bad in there.

He also has a 2 car garage.

And it does the job pretty well. My garage is an oversized 2 car and UNinsulated. In the dead of winter my garage is warm enough to just go with a short sleeve shirt in about 15 minutes. It's cheap, portable, and mounts right to the top of any Propane tank.

How long dose a 20lb tank last?
 
I know you said you did not want to go with tube heaters but that is the way to go, very easy to intall you dont have to worry about fumes it is completely sealed. also it does not heat the air it heats everything in your garage. so if you open your door it will still be warm after you close it back down. I deal with a company called radiant energy systems they are in wixom and their prices are very resonable. I think they only sell wholesale but if you want i probably could get you hooked up. plus the floor will always be warm..
 
I use a couple of things. Have a house furnace along with a 175,000 torpedo to warm the garage. But its 24x48 block walls. This year will keep the heat on low all year around.

I totally agree the radiant tubes are the best way to go, but I really would like to avoid another hole in my roof if possible.

I thought about trying the ventless radiant wall units this winter and if it didn't work out, then get the tube next year. Only problem would be painting in the garage during the winter would be difficult.

Maybe I will call your place and talk w/ them.

I think they have to be 18 inches off the floor. My garage had a fuel oil furnace in it and it worked great. The air inlet was under the under so the flame was higher than 18 inches
 
i have a forced air unit that hang's of my ceiling! in my old garage i had a vent free and would not buy another one again! (it sucked) far as radiant heat it work's really nice as long as you have the ceiling height! ( in my brother in -laws garage he has 12' ceiling with radiant heat and he won't park his 68 dart under it because the damn thing get's to hot) (that's what made me go with a forced air unit this time and it was cheaper then radiant) i have about 600.00 in mine (heater-1" gas line-4" stainless pipe thru my roof-thermostat-wire) (that's with me doing the labor myself! ) if you have any quetion's just pm me !

im drunk, but... IM FROM MICHIGAN! heat in the garage? would you like a tampon with that heater? maybe a whole box? variety pack?


EDIT: ill stand by my words sober! :finger:

you :hay: from michigan complain about the cold but don't do anything about moving south. :confused:
