front cobra caliper question?

Cobra calipers are too small for mustang application. When pushed they fade. Only way to go is 4 pot brembo from Ford focus RS or Fiat 20v turbo. Thats what I have on my Mark VIII and they will put you thru the windshield. Get friendly with someone in the UK and source them there for dirt cheap. Good luck

uhh, what? And how do these even bolt on?

Personally I enjoy the Cobra brakes for my application. 84 Mustang GT with a 2750lbs weight, the 13" Cobra brakes stop it with zero issue.

I can't speak to the Fiat calipers, but the Focus RS calipers are virtually identical to the '00 Cobra R calipers. Only differences that I am aware of are the pad choices, and the RS calipers are silver while the R calipers are black. They both use the same Brembo rotor blank even (rs was a 4 lug though)

The 2 piston PBR calipers for the cobra work quite well on a street car, and even better on a lighter car. They do get a little outclassed when used very hard on a road course. Fade can become an issue depending on pads, and the longevity of the calipers goes downhill. Even then they are still workable if you keep an eye on them, but there are better choices for very heavy use.

hmm.. I'm reading even the pads are interchangeable between them? As they are the same part number from the Ford Racing Cobra R brake kit that is now discontinued but was sold here in the States.... Fiat 20V sourced the same brembo caliper.

Yep, same backing plate pattern. The stock pads for the RS have some posts that slide into the pistons for NVH reasons, but everything is still interchangeable. The Brembo 4 pot is based on an older caliper they did for a lotus (don't recall which one) and I believe Ford had the back portion redone to integrate the mounting bracket for the Cobra R. I think that caliper was seriously considered to be part of the 99 cobra, but for some reason wasn't. Probably cost related.

I have a full set of 10th Anniversary (red) front and rear 2003 Cobra brakes for sale if anyone is interested. I will be posting them soon just haven't gotten around to it yet.

They considered a radial mount caliper with a different caliper body that included the crossover tube as well (for the 2000R), but it was nixed based on cost. Not sure of any implications/considerations on the 99 Cobras though. I happen to know the engineer at Ford that developed that brake package and he shared that info. with me at one point.

I guess you answered your own question haha. But yeah they bolt right up. Focus RS, Fiat 20v Turbo and one of the Alfa Romeos had the same calipers as the Cobra R. I've had the 2 pot cobra calipers and the 4 pot brembos are a night and day difference. Weight of the car does make a huge impact on the braking system. My Lincoln is a fat pig that's why the 2 pot cobra brakes were not good enough.
