Ok...right at the end of summer I (being lazy) let a friend (whom is a resepected mechanic a LARGE ford dealer) do my ring gear. It is a messy job and I really didnt want to do it in my garage. SOOO...i do him a favor and in turn he does me one. WELL....i think i got the SHORT end of stick.
I originally had 4.30 gears and decided to do a swap with some micronited (sp) 4.30's. When I got in the car the rear end was kinda loud and his reponse was they will be a little whiney cause of the "style" of gears. and "WHO cares it is a RACE car"........OK...clue number ONE...

WELL...present day..I have put on 212 miles since gear change and COULDNT stand the sound. SO i said screw it...Iam going to get messy and do them myself. UH GOD!!!!!!!!! did I find a mess.....
The mesh of ring gear looked fine BUT the bearing looked like he HAMMERED them in. Carrier bearings were DESTROYED..crush bearing had NO pre-load I could spin it free hand. GRANTED, I gave him a master rebuild kit to use also.
here are a few pics of carnage after I pulled it all out..

good thing I never made a pass with the gears set up that way. I am GLAD too...could have been bad news!!!!!!

A properly manufactured gear installed correctly makes virtually no noise, at least no more noise than any other passenger vehicle. I see so many vehicles with gear sets that are improperly installed its not funny. Improperly preloaded bearings, metal in the housings from improper cleaning.
In 200 miles, you may have dammaged your gear set some what.

That sucks. That's why I let DTS to all my rear end work. I've never had a problem with them...ever. I had work done in September one year from them, too the car home parked it for 8 months. The pinion seal leaked when I brought it back out, and they replaced it for free. Prolly wasn't good I let it sit so long after work done, but regardless, they stood up and fixed it.
