How critical is it in a used rear? I am planning on swapping axles and need to remove the cover to do so. I can get lube, but friction modifer is harder to come by.

depends, if you get the right fluid, its not needed

Definitely Ford dealer, Reiko, I've seen it at Murrays too, or even better try NAPA instead of Murrays....

Everytime I sell a Ford axle to someone and they call me complaing about noise, I ask them if they used FM...and they're like WHATTT??? I send them to my rear end shop, they put it in and the noises go away. I would use it.
