Ok here is the deal:
Dad's 1996 ford 3500 van. I think its a 5.0L
wont start. I reciently put a new fuel filter.
Will start every other day??
Using starting fluid, it will start sometimes, and fire from the fluid but will not always run.

I got it started and up to temp and ran some seafoam thru the intake and gas tank.

Next day, will not start!

I think its the fuel pump or screen. How do I test this?? I think I should pull the motor dog house and check for pressure at the fuel rail, but kind of dont know what to test/do next.

Remove Dog house and check fuel pressure. Alot of times on the older Vans the Inertia switch will fial cuasing no starts and or the Fuel pump sending unit wiring will fial cuasing a no start. It could also be rust in the tank or other obstructions. I have seen the fuel pressure regulators jam up on those engines at high and low pressure so you have a few things to check out.

Get some info and I will do my best to walk you through this.

I think you have the last of the pushrod motors 5.0/5.8

I'm dad has a '00-'01 Ford van with 5.4
He does alot of driving and can get 150k on the fuel pump.

I change the fuel filter every 10-15k miles just to be on the safe side to prolong the pumps life.

To your problem...
Have someone get in the van.. get under and put your hand on the bottom of tank and see if you can feel the pump kicking ON at start up.
If nothing.. cycle the key and see if anything changes.

If you hit one of your "dead" starts..
Try banging on the bottom of the tank its self.
The Fuel Pump could be "getting" weak or picked up some dirt on the bag inside of tank.
When my dads Fuel Pump was weak.. it hit a no start and i gave the tank a few quick bangs and it started right up.

odd one, happened to me this past summer, pull the dist cap, the metal tab that was on the rotor broke and was changing timing.
