the elctronic ones are a temporary fix, they have to be to legally be sold in the US, caspers made the best and they got shut down because they lasted too long, the other style usually doesnt work, it just takes care of that one code, and usually trips another one
 
I know the mechanical option is pretty popular w/ the 350Z crowd. Some even push a little steel wool in the non-fouler IIRC.

The "cheap" one would probably work on the '98. It's really just a voltage dividing circuit to cut the voltage reading down. I had built one years ago for a '97 Dakota but never got it installed. Bench testing it showed the circuit did was it was supposed to though. Do a web search and you'll find a circuit diagram I'm sure. Would be very cheap to try out.
