so when i had my engine machine work done, i had the machine shop order a new balancer for me at the same time. I've been having poping issues in the high end with my turbo car and exhausted all points to timing. My turbo glows red at night after just 2, 30 mph roll on pulls, Fuel is 11.3 at WOT, 14.3 at idle. timing on my passenger side pointer is 10* with the spout out.

after a little research i found out that the ballancer i have is for a pre-80 351w...i have a 94 351w.

heres my thought...see if im on the right track...ill find out later....but i just don't know how the car is even running smooth at idle and mid range, but shitty at WOT only...

so pre-80 351w timing pointers were located on the drivers side top, Post 80 351w were located on the passenger side top (where mine is.)

So the timing marks on my balancer should be read from the driver side pointer of an older 351w not the passenger side pointer im using now.

this would mean im like 50-70* off because of the timing mark location difference i think? wouldn't it run like shit at idle even?

thoughts?

Edit..balancer has multiple timing location marks for different applications.

If you think the pointer is wrong use a piston stop to check and make sure that TDC matches with the balancer.

Thats what im thinking......i dropped it in at what i thought was tdc, but if the pointer was on the pass side and the balancer has marks set up to be read from the driver side...how did that happen? any thoughts?

timing chain marks line up perfectly.

The key way strait up is TDC so I'm pretty sure it doesn’t matter what way the numbers read on the balancer. I would check it with a stop for peace of mind but I think you might be going in the wrong direction.. Popping out the exhaust or intake? Popping and glowing headers means that bitch is LEAN. I had a similar issue with my old car and it turned out to be a fuel delivery problem (bad fuel regulator).. I think your using a PMS? Where are you turning on stand-alone mode at?

The timing marks and dampers are all the same on 1970-1995 351W. They were all on the passenger side. The 1969 and previous had the mark on the drivers side.

The aftermarket dampers have timing marks on both sides. When you put it on TDC the timing mark should line up with (0).

maybe this ones for the 69 then..... shes not lean for sure. plugs are black and shes smoken fuel when the boost comes on....my wideband also is reading 11.3 or so at WOT.

poping on exhaust also. no intake

im not tuning stand alone mode. fuel pressure gauge reads at 42 psi at idle and climbs as boost comes on.

You have to use stand alone for your tables to work.. It locks timing advance and fuel so you can change it to what you want.

UPDATE!

Timing was off 10* when we switched PS to DS. Changed it, car started running good.

Thanks for the tips on the stand alone 94 Drop...helped a ton while tuning at milan on Saturday.

:thumbsups No prob.. The trick with the stand alone is to have it kick in @ about 1-2 pounds of boost, you just have to figure out what RPM that is (usally around 3000-3500) with about 45%TPS

yea...set her to 3000 @30%TPS she was worken good. think i need to back my fuel off some in the boost table tho.....she dosent pull as hard as she should in the big end. she 60ft's good tho.

Speedy was there and we were talking in the lanes. hes got a PMS car comming too so im hoping to pass anything i learn to him too.

Looks like this site might be down right now but I got a bunch of info from here. stangtuning.net I know there are a bunch of people that dislike the PMS but it worked good for me.
