Ford 4.6 questions

Looking to get a new engine for my 02 Explorer. These guys I'm talking to are claiming that is the exact vehicle and year I have to find. I can't imagine the engine being changed for everything it was put in. What vehicles and years would work? I'd at least imagine I could find 02-04 Explorers, 02-? F150s, 02-? Expeditions. At least those are truck engines and would have a similar set of cams. Who gives a crap about the intake/manifolds. I'll be using stock ones anyways.

Any help? Dont' know a whole lot about the "mod motors".

If you are just looking for a short block it will greatly open up your options, heads and timing covers are all going to be different. Be careful of the 6 and 8 bolt cranks, I assume the F-150 and Expedition have 8 bolt, not sure of the Exploders.

I am sure others will know for sure.

At this point I'm leaving my options open for shortblock or longblock. I really only need the shortblock but a low miles long block would be nice. That way I wouldnt have to rack up a ton of money in parts. The timing kit for the damn thing is $200 alone.

yeah watch those timing covers, i know they change.. Like position of where the serp. belt tensioner bolts down to

could try posting this over on modularfords.com, to my knowledge the 4.6 stuff is pretty interchangeable.

I thought of that but hate to subscribe to a forum just for one tech question. This being Motown Mustangs I thought someone could answer it for me. I know a lot of it has to be I posted in the right forum....not The Pit like most would of to get a quick answer.

That's a 2002 4.6? 2002 Truck engine? 2002 Explorer engine?

Thanks in advance for your help!

2002
4.6
ford explorer & mercury mountaineer are interchangeable, but they do not show 2000 2001 2003 2004 or any other year as compatible, if it was, it would be listed as such, it also shows the engine block as 2002 only.

That blows. I've had junkyards tell me the same thing. At this point I'm no farther ahead than buying a 'yard engine over rebuilding mine. Might as well tear it out, strip it down, toss in some bearings/plugs, and then toss in a new oil pump/water pump/and timing set.
