Ford 302, scratch at bottom of cylinder

guys tell me what you think. i got a scratch on the bottom of my cylinder. i can't get a nail on it but i ran a zip tie over it and it catches it. its starts at the very bottom of the cylinder and runs 2 inches up the cylinder vertically. it just seems like something got stuck between the piston skirt and the cylinder. I'm pretty positive the rings don't even go that far down the cylinder so is it something i should be majorly concerned with?

heres a pic, you can see the scratch lined up with the rod cap nut. it also is parallel with the con rod in that cylinder too

I ran one I think (from what I can see in the pic)was a little worse then that with no problems for 3 yrs on a 150 shot, But that is up to you if you decide to run it

If all fails you will get a little blow by or ex smoke, either you fix it now or run it the way it is, If it turns out ok your golden and save yourself the money for a block/ new sleeve and new rings

i think I'm gonna go ahead and try to run it. the block is in really good shape and the engine itself has very low mileage (the condition reflects that) i think throughout its life span that mark will wear down to nothing or real small. if it was more in the middle of the piston stroke id be more concerned about sealing issues but its right on the skirt and the skirts are pretty big on stock 302 pistons

As long as it is below your oil ring you will be fine IMO, I would run it

Below ring travel and below the surface, you should be fine. If the heads are off, pop that one out and stone the bore to make sure it's below the surface. Even if it's not, the skirt will have a matching groove real soon. Should be OK.

I have seen oil ring retainer rings that have came out during install from people not being carfull put scratches in cylinder walls like that!!!

When I made my first post I was assuming this motor has been ran, If it is a new fresh build (never ran) I would agree on pulling that piston and checking it also
