So I have been thinking of trying out some fly fishing this year but I don't know how to fly fish and don't know much about the technique to be honest. I have fished for years just normal rod and reel, bass, walleye, perch, etc type fishing. I was wondering if anyone had an recommendations on a good novice setup and some areas to try it out. I live by Yates Cider mill and see people there fishing all the time. Just want to try something new but I am starting at almost rock bottom in the knowledge and equipment area. Any insite would be greatly appreciated..
 
First off pull out your wallet fly fishing is like golf exspensive as hell! You can fish at yates in spring and fall for steelhead and some king salmon run in the fall. The west side of the state is where to go for trout salmon and steelhead I fish the pere marquete and the betsie river both are great for fly fishing its worth the drive!
 
Go to walmart, buy a beginner package for like $30.00. everything is included. Watch How to video's on youtube. Go to a lake/pond and practice on bluegill.

That is what I did, but I went to bass pro shop and got a novice kit there. (should've went to walmart.)

x2 for pere marquette. I go every year for the last 20 years.

Those combos are junk. Absolute junk.

As for an entry level combo goes, this is as good as it gets. Worth spending the extra $100 for something that wont drive you nuts bc you cant throw a line.

Fly fishing really isn't that expensive compared to a lot of hobbies. And if you're looking to fish warm water there are gills, bass, and even pike in damn near every lake or pond around you.

I talked to Nate, I'm going to swing over with my gear so he can give it a go

:facepalm:That's like saying before doing skiing for the first, time, don't spend $30.00 on rental, buy $1500 worth of equipment.

it was entry level before I went to buy hundreds of dollars in equipment.
