Some Texans use 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid pickup trucks to power homes amid winter storm

Some 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid pickup owners in Texas are using it to power their homes during the winter storm that’s left millions without electricity and heat.

The truck’s PowerBoost onboard generator “gives you the ability to use your truck like a mobile generator,” according to Ford.

Jerry Hall, 73, told CNBC on Thursday that “the truck saved the day.”

Very true, but if you already own the truck why not. Also I'm sure there isn't a generator left on the shelf in all of Texas at this point.

I always tell people they should have a generator, even if they get the $99 one from Harbor freight... It seems like an adult thing to do. Otherwise you lose all of your food in the fridge and have no way for your furnace to heat your house. Also, you should have a transfer switch on your furnace to use generator power and cut power from the grid.

Took about an hour to install and I bought a 9000w generator from Costco for $500 (?).. it runs off of gas, propane or natural gas.. it'll run half my house.. $800 total cost

The nice thing about back-feeding is I don't have to worry about
choosing which circuits I want / need to power.

I simply shut off the house main power switch, back-feed from
the generator into the box & everything has available power,
safely.

I wired my house when it was built, and I actually found it better just to have a smaller 20 circuit auxiliary panel, and I use an interlock to ensure I don't backfeed out of the house. Gives more flexibility than the transfer switch, and it literally only cost the amount of the panel extra, since I run the circuits in it while on the grid.

I also love my Firman generator. I have a 10kw unit very similar to the one Costco had (got mine online). I love that it's dual fuel out of the gate. I plan to only run it on Propane, but I like that I can run gasoline if needed. My buddy's got one too - we both live in rural areas, so no power we don't have water (well). This thing powers everything I need, within reason.

That switch is nice, I should get that instead of back feeding, would be way easier for my wife to do.

I looked up a bunch of diffrent options to power the house and I like this set up..
Power goes out, fire up the generator and plug it in.. flick the switch from line to Generator and done.. no need to remember to shut off the main.. you don't want to backfeed the line!

If I were buying a new F150, I would most likely buy this feature/package.

i was looking at new F-150's and this was a must have... I can use it to power my tig welder anywhere... I do have a firman but its only a 3500... with the "buck fiddy" I dont have to load the generator up.. try to figure out just how much I fuel I need... go to a buddies to weld something.... then get the gas out to store it again until its needed...
