Ex smokers, help me out.

I'm starting the internal Struggle as to why I'm still a smoker. Part of me wants to quit, yet part of me wants to smoke (I can't answer why, It's the answer I'm lacking on quitting).

I don't smoke in the house, in my car when my kids are there or in my wife's car ever, I don't smoke to socalize at work, only 1 other co-worker smokes and we don't take breaks together.

Monday was supposed to be my quit day, however I realize that saturday I subconsously sabotgaed my up coming quit by over buying cig's for our party, leaving me with 2 packs for monday.

Last night I ran out of Smokes around 7:30PM and skipped going to the store. this morning I was fine until I was on my way to work and I started the internal dialog about quiting vs buying. It ended when I stopped and bought some.

I've tried patches, Wellbutrin etc etc etc. My logic now is that I have to fully justify to myself why I want to quit, have the will power / determination for the 1st week, and do it cold turkey. I realize that once I slip one time, that the cycle will start over.

How did you guys get thru the interal Strife?

Does you being a massive contributor to global warming not change your mind? LOL Sorry. Never been in that situation, but can only imagine the difficulty of going through it.

Honestly I believe the global warming by smoker is Bullshit. Beside this isn't about me and the world it's about me and smoking..

My fathers dad died of lung cancer when my dad was only 16. Didn't really have that father figure. But think about your kids and your wife and all that crap your sucking into your body.Thats why I never smoked and never will. Too many of my old friends smoke and can't stop. It's killing ya, just slowly.

Focus on the consequences. Damn Nicotine.

Yea. I agree about the global warming thing. That's the type of decision that has to be made in a selfish moment. My grandfather who has smoked since before WW2 woke up one morning and sneezed or coughed and couldn't catch his breath as well. Never smoked again. I would think that a contributing factor in motivating yourself to quit would be your health and the fact that you don't want your kid to have to lose a dad because of a terrible habit like smoking.

Maybe other smoker's can chime in here. For me even thought I hear how bad it is, I reason out that I'm in good health so it's not effecting me. Bullshit yes. I know it is killing me.

You have to want to quit to be able to do it. I quit for 10 months when i found out I was having a kid. Then I started again. God knows why.

I turned it into a financial decision. 2 packs @ $5.00 = $10.00 daily = $300.
monthly. Hmmm, I could buy a small piece of property for that money, or
make a car payment, or ????? It's been 4 plus years now.

I agree..........

Stress is the killer, I have been smoking for about 18 yrs. I quit for a while but I was working at GM(Milford Proving Grounds) I fkn hated that place with a passion. Im going to try Accupucture(again) I had no cravings and I wasnt a dick to anyone. Im sick of smelling like smoke and having ashes in my car. I would rather spend money on my son or on my car.

This is the key. YOU have to want to do it, when you're ready you will. Otherwise you're making a half-assed attempt and go back to it right away. I used to smoke like a Turk and just decided one day that I wasn't going to do it anymore. Google some pictures of smoker's lung too. Interesting viewing.

Exactly, quitting is a mental game that you have to play with yourself. When I quit, I had 2 cartons left, and I just gave them away. The way I quit was I just made myself realise that it didn't taste good, it wasn't good for my health and it was just a big waste of money. It is hard, and you will have cravings, and you will have to make yourself think about something else and your craving will go away.

My Dad has smoked like a chimney most of his life. I blame his clients in europe :D My grandfather died of lung cancer when my dad was 18, but that didn't stop him. The doctor found polyps on my dads lungs, so that encouraged him to quit.

He quit a year ago, at the same time that I cleaned up my act. So we sort of rely on each other for support. See if you can quit with someone else, then you can commiserate. It's tough, but you gotta want it.

I've also had friends who have gone to a hypnotist - and swear by it :dontknow:

I just quit 8 months ago and it was VERY VERY HARD! But like everyone said you have to want to quit. I quit cold turkey as well. Had my last pack last me one week so it was not as hard. Just had like two or so a day untill it was gone then DONE! Think about what you are doing to your lungs, that is what I thought about and the MONEY you spend every day, also that fact that you smell like shit and trust me ebven though you can;t smell it you do! I now smell people that smoke from like 10 feet away and thought, "holy shit I used to smell like that!!!" I honestly think the only reason I used to smoke was because I am the type of person that always has to be doing something and I just got bored sitting there, driving or what ever. I always felt like I needed to smoke just to be doing something. But then I really started to think how STUPID that was :dontknow:

I then said: "Lets see who is tougher the cigaretts or me?"

FUCK IT, I WON!!! Just quit dude, when you make it past the first 3 weeks you will be fine after that. Just think about that for starters: CAN YOU MAKE IT 3 weeks? Once you do, and you know you can, you will not go back, cuz what would be the point if you have already quit for 3 weeks?

QUIT QUIT QUIT QUIT :itsok:

If you go cold turkey, you may be an ass to your co workers and family for a while if your frustrated wanting a cig. The best thing to do is to warn those who are around you most so they know whats coming and they can be "extra nice" so you don't get so mad you go buy a pack.

You have to want it. That guy who did the calculations (good idea) Just imagine being able to put that money towards a project car or your kids education or a sweet vacation instead of killing yourself!

You'll be proud of yourself!

i quit when my son was born actually. Well a month before. I read some things where the baby actually takes in your scent to recognize who you are and such. So I just didnt want him to associate the smell of smoke with me. Kinda dumb, but you never know. I really wasnt a ful time smoker anyways.

Also, when you do quit, dont talk about it online or with anyone, just do it. The more you talk about it the more you will want one.

Thanks..... Monday 10-9 Is my new quit date. I'm going to think about everything I hate about smoking until then and then use that as reinforcement for my quit

I smoked from 18 to 36. I always said I would stop at 25... then 30... I finally quit because I had read studies that said that folks who smoke into their 40's on average live 10 years less than folks the same age.

My grandmother had to sleep with an 02 bottle at nite because of emphysema caused by smoking. My dad was a 2-3 pack a day guy and he now is winded going up stairs.

Best way to quit is to have some snacks and some ibuprofen. I had headaches for a few days. Even though you don't smoke around your kids, you smell like clothes, as do your clothes.

What is that vid in your sig, is that real? That's pretty disgusting.
