I just bought my Aussie Pup, Kimber, a dog pack for this summer.

What do you bring in your dogs pack? She is 40lbs and almost 1 year old, how much weight can I put in the pack? How long do you think we can hike on an 80 degree day? I plan on hitting up the 8 mile rough trail at indian springs, should I be worried about her finnishing that? That might sound kind of like a stupid question but I'm sure she will be totally different carrying a pack with some weight in it. What are some trails you suggest in SE michigan? I'm in waterford, but I wouldn't mind traveling 30-40 minutes for a good day with my puppy :)

also. What do you do with their poop? Put in in their pack? lol

my wife says about 20% of their body weight, so about 8 pounds on its back. she also says dont take the dog on an 80* day, heat stroke will set in fast if they are carrying something/ anything.

btw, shes a vet.

that pack weighs about a pound so maybe 7 pounds worth of goods in it. that pack might also be too big for your dog, it says for 50-80 pound dogs.

Okay -- good advice for the heat stroke, I wouldnt have even thought 80 was too hot! :)

Yeah, the pack miiiight be too big, but she is still gaining weight and I guess we'll just have to see when it gets here - I'm getting to delivered to the store so it should be easy to return it lol I figured it was measured in chest diameter and all of the other packs I looked at were like 28-36'' chest diameter for a medium so I automatically picked medium for this one without looking at how it was measured. woops! Well just have to see

thanks for the advice! Very cool that your wife is a vet!

Yeah you're supposed to keep their poop in a bag and dispose of it properly, that's if you're in the city. If you're on a trail in the woods and get her off the trail shouldn't be any problem.
Get her a Camelback, can she drink through a straw?

you might want to try short trips with just the pack first. I started odie on a makeshift backpack. He likes the feeling of working. I just put 2 bottles of water in there, one for him one for me. and he loves it. if they aren't used to it though, long hikes are going to be a hard thing for them to do. Take something that weighs a fifth of your bodyweight and strap it on you and go for a hike. You are going to be more tired more quickly. I'd say just strap it on her and go for a normal walk for about a week or so and increase the distance and time daily. Wait a week or two to do any distance hiking with the pack on.

Have fun!! She will love it!

As far as the poop goes, I actually took a little shovel one time and strapped it on him, and just buried the poop like I was camping. :) LOL
