Ever been on a Cruise?

I've been on one cruise thru the eastern Caribbean which included St. Thomas, Grand Turk, Tortola and Half Moon Cay. This was on Holland America over Thankgiving in 2006.

1) Don't hesitate to be early getting there, or hanging around when getting off. You can't get 2000 people on a ship in ten minutes. The earlier you get there, the earlier your vacation starts. I drove the 4 hours to Ft. Lauderdale and I stayed on the ship until the hallways and food places were almost empty before driving back.

2) This should be obvious, but have your passport handy at all ports of call. Our cruise was one of the last that it wasn't required, even in Grand Turk and Tortola. Some ports have to run you thru customs, either before you leave the ship or when you return. Be prepared.

3) Cruise ships have casinos. The age on most is 18, but some are 21. Check before you go and make sure you have cash if you want to play.

4) As mentioned, have reading material.

5) I don't get sea sick so it was never an issue.

6) Eat in moderation. Remember, the buffets are usually 24 hr so the food won't run out. Very much like Vegas.

7) Seating assignments for dinner are usually set by the ship. And you may get seperated from some in your group. And I mean all the way across the room or even a different time. Don't get upset the first night if this happens. See the purser in the morning to get everyone at the same table and time. They can be switched.

8) As mentioned, the captain will have a couple formal dinners. Be dressed for the occasion. Or not! You don't have to attend if you'd prefer not to. All the other restaurants are still open. I skipped the second one and grabbed a burger and hit the casino.

9) Have a friend by some liquor at duty free and take it to your room. I doubt anyone will say anything. But the mouthwash bottle is a good idea for the first day or two.

10) As mentioned, nothing on ship costs you anything until you get off the ship. But I like the idea of pay for the excursion directly instead of going thru the ship to save money.

11) Watch the traffic when on the islands! They normally use British rules and drive on the left side.

12) If you want to call someone on your cell, try to do it in the USVI.

13) The last night of the cruise, they will be taking your bags down during the night. You'll need to having everything except yourself and your purse outside your room. You also need to think about tipping the guy who makes your room up every day. And they like cash.

14) Some cruiselines have their own islands. For Holland America, it was Half Moon Cay. They also have places at the dock that take the ship's card for payment. These are just places to fill out the schedule and to relax on a beach.

15) Every so often check the sites over the water if the ship is sailing during the day. You may see dolphins and whales pacing along the side of the ship.

Have fun!

on our cruise if you bought any alcohol, or won any(captians party and poker, casino ect you could win alcohol) They would take your name and room number down, then put it in the ships hold. They would not let us have it on the ship, same thing at port if you bought stuff they took it from you.

They even went as far as to smell opened pop bottles and what not to be sure you didnt just pour it in them.. Somehow i was lucky enought to put it in my sport water bottle and they never checked it..

alright I want to go on a Caribbean cruise, i want to chillax on the beach, swin with dolphins, ride jetskis in the ocean.

It seems royal Caribbean is the way to go, which islands? Jamaica is off the list. Mexico seems to be run by drug gangs now.
Do I go east, west, or southern Caribbean?

I'm thinking 5 or 7 day cruise.

Also, what is the best time of the year to go? I don't want to go during summer. what is peak tourist time?

Royal Caribbean is a good choice. For two people, I would lean towards a 5 day. Bigger group, 7 day. Best time to go is now - winter months. The weather down there is fairly constant year round... but you'll appreciate it more when you leave here when it's 10* out, and it's 80* there. I would do the west (or south), not that there's a lot of difference.

If you get serious about booking something, check out cruisecritic.com. They have user reviews of each cruise, the boat, etc.

Mark,

As I said we did a south carrib in October that was terrific. We were in a group of 20 people with half being first timers and the other half expert cruisers. We sailed with Carnival on the "Victory" and were told by the experienced cruisers that we had much larger rooms than they had on Royal Carribean. Something like 160 sq ft vs. 185. I assume this could vary ship to ship no matter what line you are on.

We aren't really that interested in Mexico or Jamaica so our next cruise will most likely be Bahamas, Turks, eastern/southern carribbean. It would be sweet to get down to Aruba and Caraco (way waaay south).

Other considerations:

In most cases traveling costs are fixed, ie, it costs the same to fly for a 5 day cruise vs. a 7 day. So why not pay a bit more for the cruise and enjoy a 7 day. If I take a week off of work, i'm not blowing 5 vacation days for a 5 day cruise. I have 9 days to use (including weekends), I want to milk every last one of em.

You are going to have alot of locals on your ship from your embarkation port. So if you leave from San Juan you'll have alot of puerto ricans and there will be puerto rican bands etc. Same thing with Florida ports, Charleston, Mobile, New Orleans, LA.. etc

Some in our party were trying to figure out ways to smuggle alcohol on. We didn't see a point. The drinks were average priced. Budget a couple hundy on drinks over 7 days and be done with it. Is it worth having to go make a drink in your room or just staying in your room and drinking? No. The only time you want to be in the room is to sleep, period. And if you can sleep outside on the top decks, do it
